I began to wonder if this my love guy was maybe dangerous…? Maybe this guy was making his move now that Leon was gone. Maybe Sage had been using her grandfather as an excuse to avoid this guy and now that wasn’t the case…

It’s not my business.

This is Sage’s life. I’m just here to say goodbye to Leon.

“I have so much on my mind right now,” Sage said. “Listen, I have to go mingle really quick. You’re not running off anywhere, are you?”

Let’s see.

Leon is dead.

You called.

I came back… to attend the funeral.

As far as I can tell, the funeral is over. Leon is in his final resting place. Everything has been handled.

All I need to do now is go straight to the airport and find a flight out of here before anything-

“I’m staying right here, Sage,” I said.

She smiled. “Good. Promise me we can have a drink later?”

I stared into her beautiful eyes and felt the quicksand inch its way up my heart…

I nodded to the woman I loved.

“I promise, Sage.”

Chapter Fourteen

SAGE

One second I was doing my duties of trying to thank everyone for attending the funeral, the next second I was kind of up against the passenger side of the sleaze-ball salesman Tad’s convertible.

“We haven’t had a second alone,” he said to me.

“I don’t have a second right now, Tad. In case you didn’t see, I’m busy. Now if you’ll excuse me, I need to go find my son. We’re due at the fire hall any moment now.”

“I’ll drive you,” Tad said.

He reached around me and I jumped out of the way.

He opened the passenger door.

“You and Travis,” he said. “At least give me that today, Sage. I feel useless and I hate feeling useless. Nothing I can do here to fix a thing. I get that.”

“We have arrangements,” I said.

Tad’s jaw tightened. “Arrangements. Your, uh, personal bodyguard over there?”

“None of your business.”

“No? Not my business? What about yours, Sage? That guy looks like he’s up to no good. Especially with the way he keeps staring at you. It’s constant.”

“Oh yeah? Why are you staring at him then?”

I heard Travis call my name and I slipped away from Tad.
