Henry walked toward one of the tables and grabbed a bottle of water.
I turned and Tad still stood in the same spot.
Alex then came rushing along, pushing right by Tad and grabbing my left arm.
She looked back at Tad. “Don’t you have some furniture to sell?”
Tad’s face dropped.
Alex tugged my arm and I walked with her.
Out front.
“Why is he here?”
“Tad? I don’t know. He just… lingers.”
“He’s like a wart. I want to slap him across the face.”
“What’s stopping you?”
“I want to get a new couch sometime soon,” Alex said.
Then she started to laugh.
That made me laugh.
Sometimes the small-town life was weird as hell.
“Listen, I wanted to offer you something,” she said. “Why don’t I take the boys home with me? I’m sure Travis can use the distraction. It’s been a rough few days for him, you know? Mitch has been driving me crazy anyway. I can order some pizza, let them stay up late… you know, just try to be normal.”
“That sounds amazing, Alex.”
“I’m sure you can use some time alone too,” she said. “I can see the smoke coming off your head from thinking so much.”
“Well, yeah, I mean… everything is different now for me. For Travis. I have so much to think-”
“So here’s the deal,” Alex said. “I’ll take Travis with me. If he needs anything, I’ll swing by your house and let him grab it. I still have a spare key.”
I nodded.
“You,” Alex said, pointing at me. “You need to say your goodbyes around here and then do something for yourself. Now, you can go back to the house and wander around, get drunk and cry and do what you need to do. Or…”
“Or…” I whispered.
Alex stepped closer to me. “Or… you can really have a night…”
She wiggled her eyebrows and moved her eyes for a second.
I casually played with my hair and pretended to touch my right earring as I turned my head.
Henry was staring at me again.
Never in a creepy way either.
Just always checking up on me. Almost like he was protecting me from a distance.
My mouth went dry.
