My knees trembled.

“I’m just saying,” Alex whispered, “if I had a man looking at me the way he was… you would be able to wring my panties out right now…”

I cringed at that visualization.

But Alex wasn’t wrong.

A felt a million butterflies colliding in my lower belly.

Oh, I was definitely going to need that drink with Henry, as soon as possible…

Chapter Fifteen

HENRY

I’m not asking - I’m telling - take me to a bar right now.

Not exactly a subtle hint from Sage, but I understood her need and sense of urgency.

I noticed the way the funeral gathering slowly came to its natural conclusion.

Everyone casually coming and going. The small-town vibe in full effect.

In my heart I wanted to know exactly who this my love was and what he actually meant to Sage. No matter how anyone wanted to assess the situation, the bottom line here was that Sage had a son. It would be one thing for me to show up and ruffle some feathers and then go back to pro hockey life and leave a mess behind. But to do that with a kid involved? Never.

I could never live with myself.

Especially when you consider certain… things… about that…

Then again, even if Sage wasn’t a mother, this kind of drama was far from my normal.

The way I viewed it - this was me battling through what I had always thought was some old high school crush. The feelings were always strong, sure, but they never mattered enough to actually end up real.

Right? Please fucking tell me I’m right…

Only I was far from right in this situation.

You want to talk about falling hard for someone.

I fell so hard for Sage my nose was still bleeding from hitting the ground.

If that makes sense at all.

All of this was racing through my head as I sat behind the wheel of the rented SUV, holding my phone with my right hand.

One text to determine the night.

I had no reason to spend another night at that hotel. So much so that I had already checked out. My bag was in the back seat of the SUV. The plan had been to leave the funeral and go straight to the airport. Take a minute to get changed in the bathroom there, then fly right back home.

You hear that? Home! My home! Not this small town. Not the million memories that walk around like spooky ghosts at a Halloween parade.

The passenger door opened and I turned my head to see Sage climbing up into the SUV.

Her eyes met mine.

Glossy. As beautiful as ever.

A pair of eyes that if they asked me to rob a bank, I would.
