“He lost the only guy in his life.”

“And I’m sure he’s sad. I’m sure he’ll have his moments. But you know what? Last night? He had the time of his life with his best bud. Okay?”

I took a deep breath. “Okay. Thank you. Sorry. I woke up today and just felt so guilty.”

“Because you had sex with that hockey player, right?”

“What?” I yelled.

“Oh, that just gave it away even more.”

My cheeks burned lava-hot.

I shook my head. “I have to go.”

“Right. Not so worried about your son now, huh?”

“That’s a mean thing to say.”

Alex laughed. “Listen to me. The boys are sleeping. You have the house to yourself… or do you?”

“Alex, I am alone now.”

“Now. That means someone was there.”

“Will you text me when they wake up?”

“Of course, Sage. I’m going to make a big breakfast. I’ll see what Travis wants to do. You have nothing to worry about.”

“I just…”

“If something were to happen,” Alex said. “If Travis seemed sad or got upset or something… I’d call. You know that. And don’t feel guilty for taking care of yourself. Ever.”

“Okay. Thank you. Again. Um, yeah.”

“Goodbye, Sage,” Alex said.

She hung up before I said goodbye.

That was that then.

Travis wasn’t hiding in a corner, crying his eyes out, hating me.

He had a great night with his best friend.

Doing exactly what he needed to do to blow off steam.

I did the same thing too.

Instead of flashlights and football, I had fellatio and fucking.

I needed a quick breakfast but the thought of cooking made me feel sick, so I poured a bowl of cereal.

I ate the cereal and was instantly sent into a raging sugar high.

I couldn’t believe that I - as a mother - allowed my son to eat this stuff before school. There was nothing nutritious at all about this sugary, chocolate stuff that apparently was a great source of random vitamins.

Oh, vitamins? I need those!
