“And Ella?” he asked, and once again I looked up to the staircase, already hearing the water still running and knowing that she was still in the shower. Which meant she wouldn't hear us, so I felt free to say what I did.

“She's no longer mortal.”

“Fuck,” he hissed at the confession.

“Well, that's good news, right? I mean, years spent with their Chosen King would have changed her anyway,” he asked, pointing out the obvious.

“I know but this is different,” I replied, running a hand over my head and pushing my hair back in frustration.

“In what way?” he asked, taking a seat at the small kitchen island.

“Touching that book, taking possession of all of those souls, it should have killed her, Orth.” I was pained to say it but it was the truth. It had been my greatest fear when I had seen her reaching out for it, knowing that in all likelihood she would not survive. But not only had she survived it, she had seemingly succeeded in such a way that she had exceeded all other Summoners before her. Even one as powerful as Niniane had been, despite wanting to chew off my own tongue off before admitting that shit aloud.

Now the question was, how and why she had been chosen?

“Any ideas on why it didn't?” he asked with his thoughts clearly mirroring my own.

“I don't know, all I do know, is it has unlocked some hidden part of her, and I have a feeling that somebody might have recognized the same thing.”

“You're talking about Pencil Dick,” Orth said, as if coming to the same conclusion.

“Go back to the house, tell Marcus to get his arse over here as I want to see him. Dom isn't the only one who knows something.”

“Well, he is a fucking Oracle, after all,” Orth reminded me, making me tense because I didn't know whether that information was another thorn in my side or not. I didn't know what it all fucking meant, I only knew that it was connected somehow. And if there was one thing I was sure about…

I would stop at nothing until I discovered it all.

A few hours later and I was just taking a shower myself, washing up ready for the lunch that Ella was downstairs currently making. This was after we had reenacted a small part of our time in the cabin that Orth had given me. A little fantasy my girl had confessed to having that had been interrupted the first time. And well, seeing as we needed fresh firewood for the fire, then it had been the perfect opportunity to try again. So, after getting sweaty, and finally having my chance to fuck Ella outdoors, I was just getting out of the shower when I heard voices.

A single moment of panic left me the moment I heard Marcus, realizing that he must have been the next person to knock at the door. At least this time I was expecting him, and I knew that even if he had arrived earlier, at the very least he wouldn't have caught me fucking Ella outside where I'd been chopping wood at the back of the cabin.

Gods, my girl was insatiable but then again, one look at that fuckable little body of hers and I was the same. In fact, it wasn't even just her incredible body that I was addicted to. It was her big green eyes looking up at me, every fucking time turning me into a lost man, one even happier to give myself over to a lost cause. I'd missed every single thing about her, despite my anger this morning realizing that she had gone out and put herself in danger.

Fuck, but she was infuriating when she pulled shit like that. But then I also had no fucking hope of staying mad at her, not when she was cute as fuck. Not when she was giving me her reasons for pissing me off as being sweet enough in wanting to give me food and let me rest. Not when she was coming on to me, with those softly spoken words and those fuck me eyes. Gods in heaven, I'd had no fucking hope at resisting, despite how mad I was.

In truth, it scared me how deeply I had slept, as usually all it took was her stirring in her sleep to wake me. How then she had managed to get up, get dressed, and be downstairs was beyond me. Let alone the fact that I didn't hear the front door open or close. Nor did I hear the car start up and drive away. But then I hadn't exactly slept much these last few weeks and clearly, I had hit a limit.

I shook my head at the thought as I pulled a fresh black T-shirt down over my chest, before doing up my jeans and running my hands through my wet hair, knotting it back with a hair tie. Then I made my way downstairs, but a sight had me stopping dead before blind fury took over. Hence why I jumped over the banister and landed with a crack on the floor, snapping the floorboards with the weight of my landing.

Then before I knew it, I had my best friend ripped out of Ella's sweet embrace and pinned against the side of the cabin wall, choking the life out of him and ready to…

Commit bloody murder.

THE TRUTH COMES OUT

ELLA

It all happened so fast. One minute I was opening the door to Marcus and taking the opportunity to thank him for all he had unknowingly done. And the next thing, a furious HellBeast was ripping him from my arms and choking him up against the wall. Naturally, I started screaming at him to stop, knowing that Marcus was letting it happen. At least until it got to a point where I could see Marcus's face start to change, just like it had done in the bathroom that day when he still believed me to be the impostor… when I'd had my voice stolen and couldn't tell him otherwise.

But right now, I had a voice, and I knew I had to use it before this started to get even more out of hand. I knew that Jared was still in a vulnerable place. That his jealousy over his past self was most likely leading his actions. Which meant I knew that if I didn't speak up now, then I would never forgive myself if something happened. If I let his anger get too far, or I allowed Marcus to reach a point of darkness that got out of control, then I knew I would find myself trying to break up a fight between the two of them. Something I wasn’t convinced I would be able to do. Which was why I yelled the only thing I could think of to get Jared to stop.

I shouted the truth.

“He saved me! Fucking stop… he saved my life, Jared!”

However, when this wasn't enough, I knew what I had to say next. Something that I was convinced would stun him enough to let him go. So, I took a deep breath and told him,
