I swallow hard as I look at him. “What do you have in mind?”

Does he want him for the summers, or the weekends, or god forbid, half of the time? I’m starting to realize that Lucas will need his father more and more as he grows older. He will need a proper male role model as he becomes a teenager and then a young man. I would hate to lose him even for a day, but if it’s for his benefit, I’ll let him go.

“What do I have in mind?” he asks as he takes a sip of his drink. “You seriously want to know?”

“I do,” I say, starting to get nervous. “I can tell that tonight was the best night of Lucas’ life. But he’s a sensitive soul and I don’t want his heart to get crushed. I know his hopes are up now. I’m worried about what the future holds for us. Are you still going to be interested in him next week or next month when the excitement has worn down and he’s crying over not being allowed to watch TV?”

I know I’m throwing a lot at him right now, especially for a second date, but when you’re a single mother, you don’t have a lot of time to mess around. You have to cut to the chase and lay all of your cards on the table.

“I’ll be honest,” he says as he looks at me with those beautiful brown eyes. “I want to marry you. I want to be a family.”

My mouth drops as I stare at him in shock. I wasn’t expecting that.

“You want to marry me?” I blurt out.

My heart soars for a brief moment, but then it comes crashing down when I realize that it’s not really me that he wants. It’s Lucas. I’m just a consolation prize that comes along with his son.

I drop my eyes. “You don’t have to do this. I know you’re just saying that for Lucas.”

He slides onto his knees in front of me and takes my hand. I force my eyes to look at him. The certainty in his eyes hits me right in the gut.

“No,” he says in a firm tone. “I wanted to marry you before tonight.”

I raise my eyebrows as I watch him skeptically.

“I never got over you,” he says with a fierceness in his tone. “That night was it for me. It changed everything. I had fallen hard for you and was crushed when you disappeared.”

He was crushed? Over me?

“I spent months searching for you,” he says as I sit here stunned. “I’ve been thinking of you ever since.”

“You have?” I want to believe him, it just seems too good to be true. He could have anyone he wants, so I don’t get why he would pick some random woman from Kansas City.

“I had never connected with anyone like I connected with you,” he says as he grips my hands. “I know how special something like that is. That’s why I haven’t been with anyone since.”

“You… haven’t?”

I’m stunned as I watch him shaking his head.

“Like I said,” he whispers as he postures up on his knees, his lips so close to mine. “It wasn’t over for me. It’s still not over.”

I swallow hard as he gazes into my eyes. It wasn’t over for me either. I’ve been thinking about him ever since.

“Can I kiss you?” he asks with his hot breath washing over my lips.

I can’t even speak, so I just nod my head.

He cups my cheek and comes forward, pressing his lips to mine. I moan with desire as I open my mouth and feel his tongue.

Oh, I’ve missed this…

Mmmmmm….

I love kissing this man.

Harris moans into my mouth as his hand slides onto my hip.

“Fiona,” he whispers between kisses.
