Shooting me a curious look, he waited to answer until we passed a busy bus stop. “Adam. I’m pretty sure he’s keeping it a secret from most of the Community for now.”

I was also pretty sure we were thinking about different news. “Right…what secret is this?”

“A new Keeper of the Forest was born,” he said.

My loud gasp caused a few passing humans to glance over in suspicion. I squeezed his hand. “Isn’t it so exciting? I hadn’t even thought about how that worked.”

He grinned. “Thought he had just appeared one day?”

“I’m sure I’m not the only one.” I gave a teasing huff. “So what happens next?”

We stopped at a red light, waiting to cross the street.

“The little guy will grow up, then do exactly what his predecessor did,” he explained.

The light changed to green, and we crossed to the next sidewalk. The new restaurant was only a block away, and my pulse thundered in my ears. It was almost go-time.

Thane glanced down at me. “I can feel your tension. What’s wrong?”

“I wouldn’t call it wrong,” I said with a coy smile.

He smirked, sending tingles through my body. “Don’t be a tease.”

I laughed. “You should know better than to ask an impossible thing like that.”

“Okay, then what’s going on in that beautiful head of yours?”

Removing my hand from his, I stopped and took out the small gift box hiding in my purse. I’d thought about giving it to him over lunch, but I hadn’t planned on him sensing something off so soon.

Plus, I was too damn excited to wait any longer.

I handed him the box, grinning at the surprised look on his face.

“Did I forget an anniversary or something?” he asked, grimacing.

I nudged him. “Just open it.”

He untied the ribbon and removed the top. A tiny ceramic bird’s nest and egg sat snugly within, and he frowned in confusion. When he read the date painted on the egg, almost nine months from now, sudden realization registered on his face.

His sapphire gaze snapped up to meet mine. “Is this real?”

“It’s real.” Smiling, I took his free hand and rested it on my stomach. “We’re having a baby.”

He slammed the cover back over the bird’s nest and egg and swooped me up into his arms, spinning us around. “I’m going to be a dad!” he yelled out, earning smiles and even a few cheers from pedestrians nearby.

Life would be easy for a few more months, then it was on to our next chaotic adventure.

I’d finally gotten my happy fucking ending.

No pun intended.

That’s a lie—pun totally intended.

THE END
