I looked down at myself. My head hurt from the hair pulling, and I had lost the portal key. But otherwise, I was okay. More than okay, I had her back.

I nodded. “Yeah, but we should go. He has the key and he can come back at any second.”

I grabbed her hand and together, we ran to the car and sped away from there.

RAIKA

“We’re almost there,” I told Ivy.

She groaned.

After we left the inn behind, Ivy asked me to drop her off anywhere. As if I would. I was bringing her to DuMoir Castle.

“They will kill me on sight!”

“No, they won’t,” I said. “I won’t allow it.” And I believed that. My friends could be fearsome and powerful supernaturals but they weren’t monsters. They didn’t kill without a good reason.

I would make Ivy’s case.

We stopped once for gas, food, and a potty break, and Ivy actually tried to ditch me. I had to yell at her just outside the gas station. People probably thought we were crazy and were about to call the police, but then she relented and came with me.

During the drive’s last thirty minutes, I drank another elixir and turned on my phone. Instantly, I regretted it when dozens of texts and missed calls flooded the screen. “Shit.”

“Looks like someone is in trouble,” Ivy said, as if enjoying this.

“Just … call Thea. Please.” I shoved my phone into her hands. She pressed on Thea’s name and started the call. The phone rang in the car’s speakers.

“Raika!” Thea answered, sounding both mad and relieved. “Where the hell are you?”

“I’ll be at the castle soon. I wanted to tell you … I have a guest.”

“A guest?”

“I’m bringing Ivy with me.”

“You subdued her?”

“No, she’s coming willingly. I’m telling you so you don’t attack her. She’s not here to fight.”

“You know we won’t be able to invite her in.”

I glanced at Ivy. She gave me a sad nod. “I know. We know.”

“All right. I’ll tell Drake and prepare for your arrival.”

“Good. Thanks.” I reached my finger to the dashboard, to turn off the call.

“Oh, and Raika? Shane is possessed.” Shit. Of course that by now he knew something was going on. “He’s probably on the flight back and won’t be able to answer if you call, but you could at least send him a message so he sees it first thing when the flight lands, hm?”

I sighed. “Will do.”

“Okay. I’ll see you soon.” She turned off the call.

“Trouble in paradise?” Ivy asked, still holding my phone.

I gave her a side glance. Not long ago, Ivy had been my best friend. In the two weeks that I had spent with her, believing she had always been there for me, I had felt a connection with her I had never felt before. Would it hurt if I let her in a little?
