I eased the pup to the tile floor just as Brock returned, his arms stuffed full of puppy goodies. He didn’t bother to ask where to put everything, heading straight for the kitchen.

Zorro barked once then trotted behind the soldier, already figuring out he had a new family. I clapped my hands, happier than I thought I could be.

Daniel yanked me against him a second time, fisting my hair. “My wife.”

I pressed my hand against his chest, trying to keep a slight distance but he was increasingly delectable. “You worried me. You were late. You should have called to let me know you were alive.”

“As my brother would say. And so it begins. Don’t worry, honey. I’ll see what I can do the next time.”

I punched him playfully and he nipped my lower lip in response before lifting his leg. I was more shocked than usual around him when he tossed me over his knee, immediately bringing his hand down against my jean-covered bottom several times. That didn’t mean a flash of pain didn’t rush through me.

“Ouch. Ouch. Don’t. You were the bad one, not me,” I groaned, fighting to try to gain some traction.

“How do you figure that to be the truth?” He was obviously enjoying himself, popping his hand down with enough force my body was jarred.

And on fire, red-hot heat coursing through me.

“Always the bastard.” I couldn’t help but tease him and this time, that’s exactly what it was, all teasing.

“Keep insulting me,” he said in a husky tone. “It turns me on.”

“There’s something wrong with you.”

“You just figured that out?” He laughed heartedly, continuing the spanking, cheerfully moving his hand from side to side on my bottom.

Where I’d fought him with everything I had before, I stopped trying altogether, indulging in the strange combination of pain and extreme pleasure. I was hanging off his knee, marveling at the fact he could so cleverly and without any swaying stand on one foot. The man was masterful at far too many things.

“Maybe I should scream for help and all your men will come running to provide assistance.”

“You should save your screams for later tonight.”

“Have I told you how much I hate you?” Another lie. Even the scent of his testosterone was amazing, fueling my senses and keeping every inch of my body tingling.

“Not lately but keep going. I’m going to fuck you long and hard because of that alone.”

I didn’t get the chance to object, Zorro trotting into the foyer as if he already owned the place. When he started barking, there was no chance to resist laughing from his antics and the sweet wag of his tail.

For about a million crazy reasons, I began to wonder whether or not I could finally consider this as my home.

CHAPTER 23

Maria

Passion.

It was something I never thought would be a part of my life. I was a little too gangly when I was younger, a little too brash to be considered a seductress. I’d never thought that having a relationship was that significant, sex not nearly as important as it had been for the girls I went to school with.

I’d been called names as a kid, four eyes and nerd just two of the milder ones, my glasses part of the reason, my high IQ something to be made fun of. I’d gotten used to those who enjoyed watching me squirm until I no longer allowed them to find a single second’s worth of satisfaction in their hateful comments. The moment I’d done that, all my tormenters had moved on to someone else.

Thank God before we’d fallen into financial despair, my mother had insisted I have eye surgery to correct the issues.

Partially because of that and also because my mother had worked so hard just to put a roof over our heads, I’d never dressed in fancy clothes, and didn’t attend my prom. And I’d been okay with that.

Or so I’d thought.

But as the flickering lights of the candle highlighted the warm glow of appreciation on Daniel’s face as he stood only inches away from me, I was taken aback by how much I realized I’d missed over the years. The look on his face was so intense that my breath was stripped away, my mind fuzzy from enjoying the heated way he raked his gaze down from my face, his nostrils flaring.

He’d remained in the same position after we’d played with Zorro, tiring him out enough I’d cradled the furry baby in my arms, carrying him to the foot of the bed. Daniel was just staring at me, taking several deep breaths. Enjoying having a new puppy together while sharing drinks then making dinner without hired help was one of the best things that had happened to me in as long as I could remember.
