Page 88 of The Pain We Nurture

The momentary calm dissipated as soon as she began speaking. Colin felt nauseated as she started explaining herself. He clenched his fist hard, leaning into the uncomfortable feeling of his knuckles straining. He briefly thought about taking his friend Johnathan up on boxing with his psychiatrist friend Alexander.

Though he needed more than a boxing bag in his gym to get out his aggression.

“I got on the wrong bus,” Olivia whispered, gripping his forearm, her nails digging in painfully at the look on his face. She knew she fucked up big time. So badly that she contemplated not even coming back as she was terrified of what her punishment was going to be. But then dismissed the thought quickly, remembering their contract, and everything Colin just did to help support Vanessa and Allison and changed her mind. She was stuck.

“I was trying to get to the other side of the city, a-and I mistook what bus I was on. It was my first time taking public transportation...they took me two hours out of the way, and when I got off at the stop, I realized I forgot my purse with my phone in it on the bus in my hurry to get off!” she broke off emotionally with a sob, pressing her fists hard to her eyes briefly and that sudden need for pain was not lost on Colin.

He instinctively placed his hand on the back of her neck under her hair and squeezed down hard. Grounding her.

“I had to hitchhike back and use their phone to call the transportation department to find the bus with my stuff. Luckily, they had it and I convinced the lady who drove me around to bring me to get it. I was able to give her some cash for her troubles when I got my purse back.”

Ending her story, she hiccupped. She was trembling, visibly upset.

For her troubles, Colin mentally seethed, standing there with every emotion imaginable violating him, and that sentence was the one repeating in a torturing echo in his brain. Somehow, he was only able to process said sentence with irritation and anger. He raised his head to the sky.

Peace. Just give me peace. I don’t ask for much. I can’t lose it, he thought. Breathing deeply.

“Baby,” Olivia’s fingernails dug deeper into his arm, and he tore his gaze from the sky, looking at her instead. Her term of endearment tugging at his heartstrings. He reached forward to brush a tear from her cheek.

“Please don’t be mad at me,” she whispered to Colin, wiping her eyes. “It was an accident,” her voice broke.

The police tipped his hat at them and walked away, thankfully turning off his lights before driving off. Colin let himself take a deep breath of relief, however that tight uncomfortable feeling in his chest wouldn’t ease up.

Colin folded her in his arms, pressing his lips to her temple. She didn’t leave me. She’s here. She came back. She came back…

Conflicting emotions hit him at once; relief for her safety, anger that she was so remiss that she got on the wrong bus and carelessly leaving her belongings, upset that he almost lost control of his looming anxiety in front of her and the cop.

He pulled away warily, caressing her cheek and preferring not to say anything and led her firmly to his car, opening the passenger door and placing her inside. He leaned into her and kissed her softly, his tongue lashed out, searching deeper. He groaned when she parted her lips for him and he shivered hard when her hands went to the back of his neck and clutched him to her desperately.

Their breaths sounded loudly between them, and his control almost snapped, he wanted to crawl on top of her and mount her right there in the passenger seat. He pulled away with a frustrated sound and buckled her in, thankful she stayed silent and let him.

Colin rounded to the back of his vehicle and paused, gripping his hands into a hard fist, the tension in his body radiating through him and getting the best of him. He stood there for a long moment, at war with his body. Feeling so out of depth for the first time at almost thirty-nine years old.

Grimacing at the pain in his hand he shook it hard, walking the rest of the way to the drivers’ side with ease. Schooling his face into a picture of calm, knowing that he needed her to have him as she knew him. In control, with no room for weakness.

But she's turning into my weakness. So what the fuck am I supposed to do with that? he stayed quiet.

On the way home in the dark he called Vanessa, Johnathan, and Mary, letting them know that Olivia was ok and just had a minor incident. He instructed Mary to go home, as she’d stayed behind at the house after her shift just in case Olivia showed up, or she was needed somehow. The woman was thoughtful.

But you do not need to be in the home for what’s about to go down.

Johnathan probed him, “You ok bro?” his simple question making him unbelievably pissed off. The fucker made sure he stayed in therapy every Monday; he didn’t want other people probing his feelings and emotions. He hung up on him without answering the question and placed his hand on hers and thumbed the back of her delicate hand, her blue veins standing out in sharp relief.

Reaching forward, he turned her seat warmer on before replacing his hand back on hers, feeling her slight tremble.

He stayed silent for the majority of their drive. Not positive he had it in him to reassure her of anything, because how could he reassure her when he couldn’t even convince himself he wasn’t about to do what he knew he was about to?

“What are you thinking about?” he said gruffly, trying to see where her thoughts were. He didn’t turn his head to meet her eyes when he felt her gaze on his profile.

“I… I don’t want to be punished for an accident. I've been running around worried all day. I knew you'd be angry, upset. I was worried about you,” she said to him softly.

His heart skipped a beat.

“I’m not going to punish you. I’m going to bury myself so deep inside you that it’s going to feel like it, but tonight is not a punishment,” he said quietly. Already imagining her scream the first time he thrust his big cock inside of her.

Man, I hope it hurts juuusssst enough to calm me down, he rubbed a hand down his jaw, breathing deeply. His dick swelled and twitched uncomfortably.

She stayed silent.
