“I’m sorry?” He looked confused, but I couldn’t blame him. We hadn’t talked about Miles or Jenni Moore since we’d left the office, so my statement must have seemed very bizarre to him.

“When Miles came to my parents’ house, he told me it was because he needed to talk to me about my contract.”

He sat up, still holding me. “That’s what he said?”

“Yes. Although once he’d sat down with a cup of coffee, he never mentioned it again.”

Hunter cupped his hand around my chin, his fingers caressing my cheek, and raised my face to his, our lips almost touching. “I know I didn’t handle that very well, but I’m so glad I arrived when I did.”

“You think he had something in mind? Other than discussing my contract?”

He looked into my eyes, like he was searching them. “Yeah, I do.”

“But my parents were there.”

“I’m not sure Miles would have let a detail like that get in his way.”

I shuddered, and he held me closer, kissing me tenderly.

It was a relief to know Miles wouldn’t be at the office anymore, but his departure has meant even more work for Hunter. He’s had to interview candidates for Miles’s job, and on top of that, we found out last week that we’ve picked up two more of Pemberton’s former clients, too.

I guess that’s why we’re both relieved to be going down to Newport for the weekend, just for a rest… although I’ll admit, I’m also nervous.

We haven’t left Boston since we got back together, and Hunter’s already told me that both Drew and Ella are going to be at the house. I’ve only met Drew in passing, and on each occasion it was quite embarrassing. As for Ella, I’ve got no idea what to expect.

“I’ve never been happier to see this place,” Hunter says as he parks his car by the garage, switching off the engine and turning to face me.

“You miss it when we don’t come here, don’t you?”

“Yes, but it’s been worth it to get you moved into the apartment.” He tilts his head, studying me. “Are you okay?”

I nod my head, and he smiles, getting out. I can’t admit my nerves to him. He’ll think I’m being silly, and will probably say so. And while I know he’d be right, I’d rather just get this over with.

As he’s helping me from the car, the front door opens and Pat appears, smiling broadly. She doesn’t say anything straight away and waits until we approach, Hunter carrying our bags.

“It’s good to see you,” she says, looking at me, not him.

“It’s good to see you, too.”

She turns her attention to Hunter, the look on her face speaking volumes. There’s love in her eyes, and an element of pride, too, as she smiles up at him.

“Drew and Ella are out by the pool,” she says.

“Good for them.” Hunter’s reply makes her chuckle, and I have to smile myself. “We’re gonna go freshen up.”

Pat stands aside, letting us enter, and Hunter leads me up to his room, closing the door behind us.

“It won’t hurt to keep them waiting,” he says, turning to face me. “Unless you’d rather get the formal introductions out of the way first?”

“No, it’s fine.”

He reaches out, pulling me close. “Don’t be nervous.”

“Is it that obvious?”

“Yes. But Ella’s gonna love you. I promise.”

I’m not so sure about that, but I’m also intrigued by something else. “Did Pat know about us splitting up?”
