“Yeah, I do. We may not have been compatible, but she wouldn’t lie to me… not about something like that. And anyway, she said she doesn’t want anything from me; she just thought I had a right to know.”

“She doesn’t want anything from you?” I find that hard to believe.

“That’s what she said. I’ve already told her that’s not happening. That’s why I’m having lunch with her tomorrow, so we can talk things through.” He sighs again. “I feel like my life is over.”

“Why?” Livia asks and we all look at her. She blushes and I take her hand in mine. “I’m sorry, but I don’t understand. Even if you’re not together, surely you can work something out, can’t you?”

“That’s not the problem,” Drew says, struggling to hide his dismay, and I squeeze Livia’s hand.

“Like Drew said, he and Lexi were never that serious about each other, but he broke up with her because he met her sister at a party… and fell for her.”

“Oh, I see.” She looks at Drew again. “Did you do anything about that? After you’d broken up with Lexi, I mean?”

“I called her. Lexi’s sister, I mean.”

“You did?” Ella’s as surprised as I am, only I’m better at holding it in.

“Yeah. I know you said I should wait, but I couldn’t. Not for very long. It was driving me crazy. I needed to see her.”

“And did you?” I ask.

“Yeah. I took her for coffee, but I kept it friendly, like you suggested.”

Ella turns to Livia again. “We told Drew he couldn’t hope to ask Lexi’s sister on a date so soon after dumping her, but he could try making friends instead.”

Livia nods her head, and we all look back at Drew. “How did it go?” I ask.

“It was perfect,” he says. “We talked for hours. I’ve seen her twice since, and we were gonna meet up again, except I had to go to Hawaii for a few days. My flight was delayed, so I only got back here late last night… and then today I got the call from Lexi. I was gonna…” He stops talking, shaking his head. “Oh, what’s the point? There’s nothing I can do about it now, is there?” He looks at me, desperation filling his voice. “We can’t even be friends anymore, can we? Not when Lexi’s having my baby.”

He has a point. It was difficult before, but now…

A silence descends over us and we eat our steaks, although I don’t think any of us are very enthusiastic about food anymore.

Drew makes his excuses, returning to the guest house as soon as he can, and Ella leaves too, giving us both a smile.

“It’s lovely to meet you at last,” she says to Livia.

“You, too.”

She goes into the house, and I turn to Livia. “Sorry about all that.”

“Will Drew be okay?”

“I’ll talk to him in the morning, before he leaves.”

“You’ll have to get up early, won’t you? It’s a long drive to New York.”

“It’ll be fine.”

“I don’t mind if you wanna go talk to him now.”

“I’m not sure he’s in the mood for talking.” I get to my feet, pulling her with me. “And anyway… I’ve got plans for this evening.”

“You have?” She looks up at me, a smile tugging at her lips

“Yes, I have.”

I pull her toward the doors, closing them behind us, and I lead her through the house and up the stairs, into my bedroom. Once inside, I sit her on the bed.
