“Can you wait here for a minute?”

She tilts her head to one side, frowning slightly. “Um… okay.”

“I won’t be long. I promise.”

She nods her head, and I grab my bag, heading for the bathroom, where I set out everything, while running a bath. It takes a little longer than I’d expected, but roughly ten minutes later, I return to Livia, who’s exactly where I left her.

I pull her to her feet, kissing her briefly, before I unzip her dress, letting it fall to the floor. Her eyes are wide, sparkling, and she breathes heavily as I remove her bra and panties, and then quickly strip off myself.

“Is there a reason we’re getting undressed in here?” she asks.

“Yeah. Clothes could be dangerous in the bathroom.”

“Dangerous?”

“You’ll see.” I turn her around. “Close your eyes.” She looks up at me. “Close your eyes,” I repeat and she does so, letting me take both of her hands and walk her into the bathroom.

As we cross the threshold, I tell her to open her eyes again, and she lets out a gasp and smiles, staring up at me.

“I—It’s beautiful.”

I’d hoped she’d like it, and I gaze around at the candles. There are over fifty of them, scattered around on every surface, including the floor. There are rose petals in the bath, too, and she leans in to me, her naked body pressed hard against mine. I don’t want us to get distracted, though, so I take her hand, helping her into the bath, and then climb in behind her, my arms and legs wrapped tight around her.

“This is perfect,” she murmurs, twisting slightly and looking up at me. I know she expects me to kiss her, and I will… but not yet.

“I’ve been meaning to ask you something.”

“Oh?” I wonder if she can guess what I’m about to say. Somehow I doubt it.

“It’s about your parents.”

Her brow furrows, and I know I’ve confused her. “My parents?”

“Yes.”

“You ran us a romantic bath to talk about my parents?”

“Not exclusively, but yes. I want to help them.”

She turns completely now, kneeling in front of me. “Is this out of guilt… because of what your father did?”

“Maybe… a little. But mostly it’s because you love them. They’re important to you, and that means they’re important to me, too. What’s happened to them is horrible, and if I can make their lives easier, then I want to at least try.”

She sighs, sitting back on her ankles. “I feel bad about leaving them.”

“I know you do.”

“And I hate that we haven’t been able to visit them. Everything’s been so crazy since we got back.” She waves her arm, splashing water over me. “And this is your home. You want to come here on the weekends.”

I nod my head. “But you’d like to be able to see more of them?”

“Of course.”

“How do you think they’d feel about moving house?”

“To Boston?” She frowns, looking uncertain.

“I was thinking of Newport.”
