Dear God…

“She sounds very young.” Ella’s voice brings me back to reality with a bump.

“She is. Was there a reason you called?”

“Is there a reason you just tried to change the subject so abruptly?”

“Of course not.”

There’s a second’s silence and then she says, “I believe you… not.”

“Oh, grow up, will you?”

She chuckles, unable to take anything seriously. “Even if I do, I’ll never be as old as you.”

I wish she’d stop talking about age. It just reminds me of the gap between myself and Livia, and while I guess I’ve always been aware of it, having it put into context is a little sobering.

“I have work to do, Ella…”

“I know.”

“Why didn’t you call my cell?”

It would have saved you from finding out about Livia.

“I did,” she says. “You didn’t pick up.”

I reach out, flipping it over, and see I’ve got a missed call. The volume’s turned down, but even if it wasn’t, I’ve been so engrossed with Livia, I doubt I’d have heard it.

“Sorry.”

“That’s okay. I just wanted to let you know I’m coming home.”

“Really?” Drew and I have always known she’d be back sometime soon, but she’s never put a definite date on it, which I guess she still hasn’t…

“I haven’t booked my ticket yet, or anything.”

“Does this mean you want me to collect you from the airport?”

“Probably not. I think I’m gonna be staying in the city for a while.”

“You are?” That doesn’t sound like Ella at all. She hates the city and always prefers to be at home in Newport.

“Yeah. Believe it or not, I’ve got a job.”

“A job?”

“I know. It’s shocking, isn’t it?” It is, but I don’t say so. “I’m not due to start for a while, but I’m flying back early so I can find somewhere to live.” She sighs. “It’s all happened so fast.”

“So, what’s the job?”

“It involves cooking, before you suggest I’ve wasted the last four years… but it’s not in a restaurant.”

“You’re being very cagey.”

“Hmm… because I’m not supposed to say anything about it yet.”

“Oh, I see.” I don’t, but knowing Ella, this is probably just a tease. I only hope her four years of training won’t result in her flipping burgers at a fast-food joint. “Do you want to stay at my place while you’re looking for somewhere of your own?”
