Brien followed him to the door, and the two men conversed in low tones, Talon frowning at them. When they were finished, Cain slipped out the door. Everyone else stayed for a second toast, then filed out, even Olivia, until it was just me, Talon and my parents.

My father stuck out his hand for Talon to shake. “You take care of her, you hear? Both of them.”

“I will, Mr. Montgomery. You have my word on it.”

They exchanged an unreadable, very male look, then my dad released Talon’s hand and clapped him on the back. “Call me Wes, son. Maybe I’ll take you out night fishing sometime. I could use a strong back, and I bet you see real good in the dark.”

I rolled my eyes. “Dad! He doesn’t have time for—”

“No, it’s okay,” Talon told me. “I’d like that,” he told my dad.

“Call me when you’re free,” Dad said, and Talon nodded.

But it was my mom who had the last word.

“See,” she said, leaning forward to kiss first me, then my sleeping infant. “I told you that in the end, everything would work out for the best.”

“You did.” I smiled over her head at Talon. “You did.”
