I look at the man who fell off the balcony from a gunshot to the gut, and the head wound made things pretty clear how he died.

“Why are you here?” I ask. “And are the cops on the way?”

“We’re clear, Hook.” Sal looks up to me. “Carlo’s goons had the room cleared, and we… heh… we had Carlo’s goons cleared. Doesn’t mean we don’t gotta clean up though, princess.” He laughs to himself while getting to his feet. Who wears thousand-dollar loafers to a job like this? Sal Dicey, I guess.

“You know… you got a guardian angel in that widow of yours.”

My brow furrows.

“She called Donny, hysterical, said there were two giant men sitting at your table, and that the Barones found you out.”

A half smirk climbs my face.

Chapter 31

Alessia

My vision shakes as I stare at the burner phone in my grasp. Donny told me to stay put, and ‘let us do what we do best.’ Make-up stings my eyes from the tears, and I don’t think I’ve ever been this distraught in my life.

It took me a while to calm down after Leandro rung me out and left me to dry in the reception hall. I’d been through too much. Sacrificed too much for that man to throw it away, and for what? The location of a hit? The more I replayed that moment over, the more things weren’t adding up. He may be cold, but those words… That wasn’t my Leandro. And when I peeked back into the room, it dawned on me. He was found out, and was protecting me. There was nothing left to do but get my hands on his phone in the safe.

I matched the phone number with the time I remember Leandro spoke with Donny last. It was a last-ditch effort, but he said he had a few guys that could get there within the hour.

Now I’m locked up in our room, my mind thinking of all sorts of outcomes. My God… is Leandro going to be assassinated? Did the guys make it in time?

I don’t want to live as a single mother… and I don’t want anyone else raising this baby with me. I want him, my wolf.

Please be okay, please.

The hour is late – it’s past midnight, and I turn on the local news station to make sure there’s no live shootout, or hostage situation, or bodies at the Plaza. It would even make national, I think.

My breath catches in my chest when I hear footsteps heading toward the front door of my suite. I clamor to get the gun I took from the safe, and check to make sure it’s locked and loaded.

The door codes open, which is a good sign.

“Whoa, whoa, lady, jeez!” A man with a gold Rolex puts his hands up, and Leandro appears at his side. I don’t give a shit about anything else.

Seeing him bloodied and roughed up scares me half to death, but if he’s good enough to walk, he’s good enough to accept me jumping on him.

“I’m sorry, Sia,” his voice rumbles deep. “I had to say those things—”

“I know you did.” I kiss him hard on the lips, then the cheek, then I hug him tight.

“You never cease to amaze me,” he says, pulling my shoulders back so he can look at me. “You knew to call Donny.”

“Desperate times.” I unlatch myself and finally peer at the other man in the room.

“Sal. Friends call me Dicey.” He holds out his hand.

I shake it tentatively, wondering a great many things. “Is it done?”

“Spoken like a true boss.” Sal laughs. “Yeah, hunnie, it’s done. Don’t worry, took out the trash too. Got a few boys mopping the floors and roughing up the Plaza security team, but all in all, I think we’ll be alright. Ey, yo, Peter Pan. I wasn’t kidding. I’m asking for half that bounty.”

“Shut the fuck up, Dice.” Leandro pushes him.

He wipes himself clean. “This is the thanks I get. I swear, with you lone-wolf types. Like you never spoke to anybody in your life. Cazzo hai potuto.”

I laugh through my tears. “This guy is funny.”
