“Yeah, well, don’t get used to him. I’m shipping him back to the Bronx where he crawled out of.”

“A fanabla!” He gestures a curse.

“Give us a minute, Dice, will you?”

“Yeah, sure, I’ll be right outside.” He changes his tone entirely to be perfectly casual, yanking another laugh out of me.

“Didn’t you guys just get into a shootout? Jesus. How can he be so light about everything?”

“Sociopaths, sweetheart. We are what we are.” Sal waves as Leandro shuts the door in his face.

When the room falls silent, Leandro takes a long breath. I’m so ecstatic to see him in one piece – his arms wrapped around me – that I can’t wipe the smile off my face.

“I love you, Sia, more than I ever imagined I could. When my life reel played as those thugs surrounded me, I thought of you. Our future. I realized… I’m not ready to die.”

My heart melts inside my body and falls to liquid gunk at my feet. This man is my everything.

“I love you too, wolf.”

We spend a minute appreciating one another, before Leandro plops himself on the bed and sighs. “What a fucking day.”

“You’re telling me. My hands are still shaking. Look.” I show him, and he kisses them gingerly.

“We’re hours away from our new life, Sia. Just hang in there, and we’ll get you to a new place, doctors, everything you need. I promise.”

I bite my lip, nodding. The prospect sounds so perfect I feel like a fool for believing it.

Knock. Knock. Knock.

“Hey, uh, lovebirds, mind letting Uncle Sal in now?”

I crack up again. “What’s with this guy?”

“Please don’t encourage him.” Leandro sighs and heads over to the door.

Sal takes a step in and looks at us, nodding perpetually.

“What?” Leandro growls.

“Hm. You’re not going to like how we’re leaving tonight.”

Leandro shuts his eyes tight.

“What does he mean?” I ask innocently.

“Even if Sal gets into the camera room, no way he’s going to be able to stop all the cameras outside the Plaza from seeing us exit. Once everyone finds out there’s seven or eight missing people, and the last known spot being this wedding, bet your ass there’ll be an investigation.” Leandro paces.

“Yeah, what he said.” Sal points. “So, um. We need to all sneak our skinny little asses out of here, capisce?”

“What are you thinking?” Leandro dares to ask.

“Sanitation. Garbage bags. One for the each of us, just ’til we get in the truck.”

I scrunch my face.

“Hey, hunnie. They’ll be clean. Nothing to worry about,” Sal says. “We’re going to make it look like a big dumping, but the bags with all of us will be snuck in on the side compartment, not the compactor. Don Carlo, on the other hand.” Sal laughs. “He’ll be little itty bitty bits.”

“Donny needs proof,” Leandro says.
