“We’ve only been here for ten minutes. Have you tried one of these cheese things?”

Who cared about cheese things? Nico had already spoken to the owner of the company, and Carlos Davila hadn’t impressed him. Sure, the man said all the right things, but he was too slick. Too charming.

“There’s only one thing I want to eat tonight.”

When Kaylin’s eyes widened, Nico wondered whether he’d pushed too far, but she didn’t pull away.

“What about Matty?”

“I can be very quiet.”

“I’m not sure I can.”

“Okay, we’re definitely leaving.”

“No, no, wait.” She grabbed his arm and dropped her voice to a barely audible whisper. “I…we can’t. Not yet. Not because I don’t want to, but…”

“What’s wrong, zolottse?”

“I’m almost sure Cesare cheated on me. I need to get tested before we can…you know.”

Well, well, wasn’t this a delicate subject? Nico sent silent thanks to Emmy Black and prepared to dance across the minefield once more. Before he spoke, he steered Kaylin to a quiet corner of the top deck. Only a half-dozen people were up there, mainly to take pictures of an admittedly spectacular sunset.

“Emmy’s team was very thorough. As of last month, Cesare was clear of STDs.”

A gasp. “How on earth did she find that out?”

“I don’t know, and I wasn’t going to question her methods. All I cared about was results. She also told me who he was cheating with and mentioned that during their last encounter, he used a condom.”

“But…how…?”

“The operation was invasive, and I’m sorry for that. I wish there had been another way, but they were assessing every angle in order to get you out of there.”

“Who was he cheating with?” Her voice had gone flat. “Tell me.”

“Are you sure you want to know?”

“No, but I need to.”

“It was Lyndsey.”

“Lyndsey? Are you kidding me? She was, like, nineteen.”

“When you went to the club on Thursdays, if he wasn’t there with you, he was with her.”

“I don’t freaking believe this. Lyndsey?”

“I’m sorry.”

“I don’t know whether to pity her or hope she rots in hell.”

“Cesare was most likely the instigator.”

“Oh, I definitely hope he rots in hell. She was meant to be caring for my son, and instead, she was screwing my husband?” Kaylin shook her head. “I was a damn fool.”

“It’s over.” Nico planted a soft kiss on her lips. “Done. Finished. Focus on the future, not the past. I only told you because it’s unlikely you have anything to worry about, health-wise.”

“Can I have a moment? I need to digest this.”
