“Oh, I hear that,” I said to Brielle in commiseration. “I’m the youngest of five and the only girl.”

“How did you ever get a date?” Brielle asked.

“I went to college in another state,” I said with a grim smile. “And then fell in love with a cheating bastard. Protective older brothers aren’t always a bad thing.”

“I need to pick your brain,” Brielle said. “I need to know how to escape the older brother problem. My brothers scare off any man I bring home.”

“Maybe you’re bringing home the wrong men,” Jazz said.

I rose from the table and looked between Jazz and Brielle. “Give me an hour to shower and get ready?”

“Sure thing,” Jazz said.

“Mia, will you give me Bones’ number before I go?”

I wasn’t even halfway up the stairs when I had my phone out and I was dialing Bones.

“Well, hey there, babe. I was wondering when I was going to hear from you.”

“Did you or did you not tell everyone in the club that you’re pursuing me?”

“I did.” His tone was pleasant, downright amused.

“Bones, you and I both know there’s nothing sexual between us.”

“We don’t know that. In fact, I think we owe it to ourselves to find out. Besides, I offered to show you around town and you took me up on the offer.”

“I just broke up with my fiancé.”

“I’ll help you get over him.”

“I don’t want you,” I seethed.

“I know that. You want Smoke.”

My eyes widened even though he couldn’t see me. “I don’t want Smoke.”

“Sure you do.” He laughed. “And my boy totally wants you back.”

“Even if I did—and he did—which we don’t—we can’t be together.”

“Why not?”

“Tavy.”

“She’s an adult. She’ll get over it. Babe, both of you are shit liars. You get that, right? Like, every time you’re both in the same space, you can’t stop staring at each other. It’s only a matter of time before Tavy finds out you guys hooked up on the way to Waco.”

I gasped. “How did you know that?”

“I didn’t. But you just confirmed what I thought.”

I groaned. “Bones, please. Please don’t tell anyone…”

“Your secret is safe with me.”

“You swear?”

“On my life,” he said, suddenly temperate. “I keep my promises. And if you want me to keep your confidence, I will.”
