“Hey,” he said after the first ring. “Where are you?”

“Out,” I said.

“Out?”

“We didn’t make concrete plans.”

“So, we should’ve talked about what time I was coming over?”

“Yep.”

“I don’t usually make plans that are set in stone. Club business gets in the way of shit sometimes.”

“Smoke,” I said quietly. “We don’t owe each other anything. Not really. I want to see you, but I’m having dinner with a friend and I’m not ready to leave.”

“I wasn’t asking you to,” he said.

“What we’re doing, this thing…I’m just now getting my own time back. My freedom back. I won’t get myself into a position like I did with Knox…”

“Hold on just a second,” he interrupted. “I’m nothing like Knox. I will never ever treat you the way he treated you. I’m blowing up your phone because I’m excited to see you, not control you.”

I softened immediately. “I appreciate what you just said. And I know you’re nothing like Knox. I’m sorry, I didn’t mean it to come out that way.”

“Guess we should’ve laid a few more ground rules last night, but I was a bit distracted.”

“Same.” I laughed. “What other ground rules?”

“Let’s talk when we’re in the same room.”

“Okay.”

“And when might that be?”

“Give me an hour to have dessert. Okay?”

“Yeah, okay.”

“And Smoke?”

“Yeah, cupcake?”

“I’m over at Rach’s for dinner.”

He fell silent for a moment and then he said, “Thanks for that.”

“You’re welcome.”

“I’ll see you in an hour?”

“An hour.”

Chapter 31

Rach was sitting at the table, sipping on her glass of wine when I came in.

“Everything good?” she asked.

“Yep.”
