“I love this house,” Rach said, her brown eyes meeting mine. “But there’s one thing I’m not a fan of.”

“What’s that?”

“The windows. They’re single pane and you can hear the street noise…” She pinned me with a stare.

I took a deep breath. “You heard my conversation.”

“I heard your conversation.” A slow grin spread across her face. “Logan, you shady lady.”

I groaned. “Don’t. I already feel like shit.”

“Sit. We’ll discuss this over pie. Now, why do you feel like shit?” she asked.

“Because I’m not supposed to be sleeping with my best friend’s father. And you know what’s even worse? I’m doing it in secret, so I know it’s wrong.”

She handed me a fork and then opened the pie box that rested between us. “I see the complication, but I’m not sure I agree with you. But before we get into all that, I have to know how this happened, because oh my God, this is juicy.”

I dug into the pie. “There was a spark from the very beginning.” I told her about our interactions, our looks, the talking in the moving truck, the one bed in the motel room.

“It wasn’t supposed to happen again,” I said. “We agreed, just those nights so I could get some of my ego back and we could get it out of our system. But then I don’t know what happened.”

“You got here and realized you weren’t able to put that cat back in the bag after all.”

“We tried,” I said. “We really tried. And then Bones had to stick his nose into our business.”

“Oh, right. The Bones thing. I think I heard about that, but I sort of forgot.” She flashed me a grin. “Mom brain. You actually like Smoke, don’t you?”

“Yes. Which is so not good for me.”

“Why not?”

“Why not? I just ended a three-year relationship. An engagement. I’m still healing. I don’t trust my own judgement right now.”

“Hmm.” She took another bite of pie.

“Hmm? What does that mean?”

“I think we talk ourselves out of things because we worry about how it’s going to look.”

“Explain.”

“Everyone would tell you not to jump into something new after what you’ve been through. Take your time. Heal. Feel through it. Get your head on straight. But life doesn’t always work that way. Sometimes the right person comes along at the worst time.”

“Hold on, though. Smoke isn’t the right person for me.”

“How do you know?”

“We’re just having fun. Keeping things casual.”

“Yeah…the conversation out there? That didn’t sound casual.”

I suddenly felt lightheaded. “No?” I gripped the table.

“When you guys spend time together, is it only naked time? Do you have sex and then kick him out?”

“Well, it only happened last night. So, there’s no pattern yet.”

“Did you kick him out last night after sex?”
