“No.”

“Did he sleep over?”

“Yes.”

“Did you guys talk? Do anything besides have sex?”

“I made him grilled cheese and then he did the dishes.”

“Uh huh. Thought so. He spent last night in your bed and he came back tonight to see you.”

“I also asked him to shave because of the whisker burn he gave me, which feels like the equivalent of wearing a scarlet letter in public. Everyone will know I’m hooking up with someone.”

“And did he tell you he wasn’t going to shave just because you asked?”

“No. He said he’d shave.”

“Interesting. So, you talk, have sex, eat food together, and he’s willing to give up facial hair. Sounds like a relationship to me. A pretty healthy one, at that.”

“Don’t say that,” I pleaded. “I was trying to be strong and not give into temptation, but son of a bitch! He’s so hot…”

“Yeah, agreed. He’s very good looking.”

“But that’s not even why I like being with him. He’s just…”

“What?”

“He makes me feel safe. Like I can tell him anything and he just gets it.”

“Would dating him in the open really be that bad?”

“Tavy will kill me,” I said. “She moved here so she could get to know him better. And then what? I come along and start to monopolize his time. Now I’m the one taking his attention? And I’m supposed to jeopardize my relationship with my best friend for a situationship with her dad? It’s mental.”

“Okay, please don’t call it a situationship. I just can’t with the lingo.”

I sniggered.

“And second of all—what if this is the real deal?”

“What if it’s not?” I set my fork down. “You’re not going to tell anyone, are you?”

“Who would I tell?”

“The Old Ladies.”

“Give me a little credit. I’m not going to blab about your relationship.”

I stood. “This thing with Smoke is just a thing. Not a relationship.”

“Where are you going?” she asked with a smirk.

“I promised him I’d see him in an hour.”

“Yeah, definitely a relationship.”

Smoke was leaning against his bike when I pulled into a parking spot next to him. He looked sexy and masculine. The streetlights illuminated his smile and it made my heart cartwheel in my chest.
