“This isn’t a game,” Grady snapped.

“And Harlan sleeps with a ferret,” I announced.

“A ferret?” Smoke asked. “A real one?”

“No.” I smirked wickedly. “A stuffed one. From when he was a baby.”

Harlan’s eyes widened. “How did you—you know what? Never mind.”

“She’s right?” Killian inquired. “You sleep with a stuffed ferret?”

Harlan straightened his spine. “His name is Mr. Winkie. Excuse me.” He marched toward the hotel room door. A moment later, it opened and closed.

“Why don’t you guys go after him,” I stated.

The three of them exchanged glances and then visibly deflated as they left the room.

“You were ruthless,” Smoke said lightly.

“Yep.” I nodded.

“It was hot.”

Laughing, I leaned over and gently kissed him. “You can still get out, you know. My family is showing you that they’re crazy and we’re not married yet. You still have time.”

“I might be nuts, but I kind of like it. Your family is protective and they love you. It shows. Go easy on them.”

“You’re the one who is laid up in bed recovering from stab wounds after saving my life. They should be going easy on you.”

“I can hold my own.”

“Hmm, yeah.”

“I gotta use the bathroom. Call the nurse, would you, please?”

It still took Smoke a lot of effort to get up, but each time was a little less labor intensive. I hoped that meant he was healing. He never complained either. Not about the pain, and not about my family.

“I’m surprised your parents weren’t involved in your brothers’ early morning inquisition,” Smoke said after he was back in bed and the nurse had left.

“I’m pretty sure they’re down in the hotel gym. I think that’s why my brothers waited. To make sure the parental units were out of the way so they could go completely rogue.”

I kissed his forehead and wrinkled my nose. “Uh. Don’t take this the wrong way, but your hair is getting a little…”

“Disgusting? Greasy?”

“Yep.”

He rubbed his stubbly jaw. I’d missed his stubble, actually, so that was a welcome sight to behold.

“Not that I want to admit this,” he began, “but I don’t have the stamina.”

I raised my brows. “I should say not.”

He rolled his eyes. “I meant about standing on my own long enough to wash. I’d ask for your help, but if your father found out we showered together, he’d geld me. I’ll have the nurse clean me up later.”

There was a knock on the connecting door and a moment later, my parents strode into the room. They were both in gym clothes and my mother’s face was pink from exertion.

“Morning, kids,” Mom said.
