“Logan, stand up,” he commanded.

“Let me just put my clothes on—”

“No.”

My head whipped around to glare at him. “You just said I could—”

Smoke rose from the bed and marched around toward me, a dangerous glint in his eye.

“What—”

“Bruises,” he clipped.

I frowned. “Where?”

He reached out and gently clasped my elbow, urging me to rise. And when I stood, completely naked in front of him, I expected a blush of embarrassment to stain my cheeks.

It never came.

Because Smoke wasn’t looking at me with desire.

He was perusing my body with murderous rage in his eyes.

“Here.” He stroked my side where my hip flared and then disappeared into my lower back. His hands skated up and down my body as he continued to examine me.

“And here.” His fingers ghosted over my upper arm. “They’ve faded, but I can see them. These marks were left by a man’s hands.” His eyes met mine. “Did Knox do this to you?”

I blinked at the ferocity emanating from him. He was practically vibrating with fury. Up until this moment, I’d only seen the good-natured Smoke. The sensually attentive Smoke.

I’d never seen the protective Smoke. The I’m-about-to-go-feral-at-the-idea-of-someone-hurting-you Smoke.

“Yes,” I said softly, so softly it was barely more than a whisper of truth escaping my lips.

“That motherfucker put his hands on you.” His nostrils flared and he clenched and unclenched his fists.

“Smoke?”

“I never should’ve touched you.”

My eyes widened. “What? Why?”

“Why? Why? Christ, Logan. You’re vulnerable, and I…”

“You what?” I hastily reached for the coverlet and pulled it around my body, no longer wanting to stand in front of him without a shield.

“Took advantage.”

“You didn’t. You absolutely didn’t. Please, Smoke. I don’t want you to worry about this. You didn’t know about that. It’s done now. He can’t hurt me anymore.”

He raked a hand through his hair in a show of frustration. “I should’ve been gentler with you. I should’ve—”

I took a step toward him and placed my hand on his warm chest. “You were perfect.”

He covered my hand with his. “Are you really okay?”

I nodded.

“I still think we should stop. This shouldn’t go any further. I don’t want to fuck with your head.”
