“You want kids?” Smoke asked me suddenly.
“Oh. Well, eventually, yeah. I know I said that looked exhausting—and it does. But eventually I want a family.”
“Big family?”
“I don’t know. Yeah, I guess.”
“You guess? Didn’t you talk about this with your ex?”
“Not really. Talk of the future and family was always a passing comment. Like, maybe one day. But not one day soon.”
“That’s a big thing not to discuss before you get married. Were you going to change your name?”
“What does that have to do with anything?” I demanded.
“Curiosity.”
“Yes, I was going to change my name.” I wasn’t going to admit that I’d spent hours testing out my new signature.
“Was that because he wanted you to change your name, or because you wanted to?”
“Both.”
“Interesting.”
“You’ve said that a lot. About several things I’ve said.”
“You say a lot of interesting things.”
“I think you’re digging for information.”
“Digging implies there’s shit to be uncovered. The stuff I’m finding is all on the surface.”
I was in the middle of glowering at him when Edith suddenly appeared at our table, her cell phone stretched out toward us, completely oblivious to our turn in conversation.
“My daughter had a daughter!” Edith said, her blue eyes bright.
I pulled my attention away from Smoke and looked at the screen of the mom and new baby who was wrapped in a pink blanket.
“She’s beautiful,” I said, meaning it.
“I wish we could’ve been there, but the baby wanted to come. So, she came,” Edith said with an elated smile.
“Edith,” Harry called from the doorway of the cafeteria.
Edith waved Harry over. “I was just showing Smoke and Logan the picture of Annalise.”
“You’ve showed them,” Harry said. “Let them get back to their fight.”
Edith frowned. “Fight? You’re having a fight?”
“It’s not a fight,” Smoke said. “It’s a discussion. How did you know, Harry?”
“Body language. Logan is clearly trying to get away from you right now,” Harry said as he trekked across the room.
Smoke grabbed the back of my chair and scooted me even closer to him and then placed his hand on my thigh.
“Maybe you can give us some advice,” Smoke said.
