He handed the bottle of tequila to Bones before picking up my bags.

“Night, Logan,” Kelp said.

“Good night,” I replied.

“Hey, if you get scared in the middle of the night—what with sleeping in a new place, come and knock on my door,” Bones said with a wide grin. “I’ll protect you.”

“I’m guessing it’s a better idea to run from you than to you,” I said.

“You’re a smart woman.”

“Hmm. Debatable. I did choose my ex.” I shrugged and then moved out of the way so I could let Smoke lead.

We were out of sight, heading up the stairs when I heard, “Damn, she’s fucking hot.”

“Fuck yeah, she is.”

I didn’t know which two of them had spoken, but it didn’t matter. The ego boost was much appreciated.

Smoke’s shoulders tensed and the back of his neck turned pink.

We went to the second floor to the end of the hallway. He set one of my bags down so he could open the door, and then he walked through with my luggage.

The room smelled like lemon cleaner and the sheets were fresh. A folded bath towel rested on the blue coverlet. It was small room with a chest of drawers, a nightstand, lamp, and no bathroom.

“Bathroom is shared. It’s down the hall. I hope that’s okay,” Smoke said.

“Oh, that’s fine. It’s just for tonight,” I said.

Smoke stood in the center of the room. It wasn’t big to begin with, but he engulfed the space and it was charged with sexual tension.

“If you need anything, I’m—”

“I’ll text Tavy,” I said quickly. And then I swallowed. “Please don’t tell me where your room is. I don’t need the temptation.”

He closed his eyes and took a breath, like he was steeling himself. Finally, he opened his eyes.

I thought he was going to say something, but instead he just turned and left.

Chapter 19

“I didn’t think anyone was awake,” I said as I came into the kitchen the following morning. I blinked tired eyes at Smoke.

The man looked as exhausted as I felt.

But still delicious.

He was dressed in a pair of worn jeans and a black tee. His leather vest was missing, but he wore the same boots he’d had on when I met him. His dark hair was askew, like he’d run his fingers through it and hadn’t bothered with a brush.

“I wanted to get up and have a few minutes with Tavy before she went to work. Coffee?”

“Sure,” I said.

He turned back to the cupboard over the coffee maker and grabbed a mug. “Why are you awake?”

“Didn’t sleep much,” I admitted.

He set the coffee mug down in front of me and then pushed the carton of cream in my direction.
