“Why don’t you ask Uncle Boxer for a cookie,” Rach said to her.

“Okay!” Lily dropped Rach’s hand and then dashed toward the playful biker who stood with Doc. I watched him scoop Lily up into his arms, and cart her over to the dessert section.

“Where’s Darcy?” Mia called to Rach.

“Headache,” Rach said. “She’s laying down for a bit.”

“I’m just going inside to use the restroom,” I said. “I’ll be back.”

I didn’t actually have to use the restroom; I just needed a moment to settle my nerves. Brooklyn had made it clear she could tell there was something between me and Smoke.

How was it that I’d been actively ignoring him, and yet in the few moments we spent together in the presence of others, we were completely obvious?

I wanted a glass of water and headed down the hallway as my phone buzzed in my back pocket.

My mother’s name flashed across the screen.

“Hi, Mom,” I answered, pivoting my direction and going out to the front porch instead.

“Hey. Just calling to check up on you.”

I smiled even though she couldn’t see me. “I thought you might.”

“So. How’re things? Any word from Knox?”

“Not since I changed my number,” I said. “And things are good. I found an apartment.”

“I thought you were going to live with Tavy.”

“Her place is too small for both of us.”

“Is the apartment in a safe neighborhood?”

“Yes.” I rolled my eyes.

“Don’t strain your eyeballs too hard when you roll them.”

I chuckled. “How did you know?”

“Because I know you.” She paused.

“What’s up?” I pressed.

“Nothing. I just—how are you?”

“I’m fine, Mom,” I said quietly. “Seriously. I’m okay.”

“Huh.”

“Huh what?”

“You’re not as devastated as I thought you’d be. I don’t know if that’s a good thing or a bad thing.”

I frowned. “Not sure I follow.”

“If you’d really been head over heels in love with Knox, his betrayal would’ve cut you a lot deeper.”

“Oh. I see.”
