I had the urge to lean up and kiss him …

But no. This wasn't that kind of fuck.

It meant nothing. Just a one-time thing to satisfy a mutual need in the heat of the moment.

That's what we'd agreed to.

"You know, Princess," he said, tracing shapes along my shoulder. "Now that the charisma isn't riding us so hard, maybe we should —"

He froze mid-sentence, body tense. "Did you hear that?"

I shook my head, but he was already on his feet, searching for his sword as a loud howl pierced the night.

Jaiel faced the darkness beyond the massive, slightly ajar door, weapon at the ready.

Hells, he was fast.

I clumsily collected my blades and joined him.

A large white wolf leaped through the entryway, its unblinking golden-yellow eyes instantly locking on mine — oddly entrancing in their ferocity. As it snarled, something inside my chest tightened, tugging at me and stealing my breath.

Growling, the large wolf stalked across the dark space toward us.

Just behind him, a bright silver wolf followed, and behind it, a third wolf, pitch-black and hard to see in the dim light.

I tried to think, to focus, but the strange tug in my chest made it hard.

Jaiel dropped his sword and held his hands up. "Apologies, mages. We mean you no harm," he said, voice soft and melodic. "We were attacked by wraiths, so took refuge here for the evening. We'll be gone come morning."

I tried to make sense of his words.

Why would you talk to a wolf?

But those golden-yellow eyes wouldn't let me go, and the white wolf crept closer, growl deepening when Jaiel stepped between us.

Something in my chest tugged me toward the wolf, and I stared at it, dumbfounded.

What in the seven hells was happening?

Jaiel put his hand back, resting it on my bare arm. "Stay behind me," he whispered.

"Absolutely not," I said, stepping to his side and reaching out with my korra.

I gasped. Vibrant blue and gold bonds pulsed like a thick corded rope between the wolf and me — nearly as thick as the one to Jaiel.

Holy hells! How did we have a bond?

As I stared, the wolf lunged toward Jaiel. The prince dove to the right, and they circled each other warily while the other two wolves crept toward me, nipping at my legs whenever I dared move.

"Who — who are you?" I asked. The white wolf's ears twitched toward me.

The wolf closest to me, pelt a bright silver, dipped his head towards the white wolf, then turned to me. The next second, it had turned to smoke and then a naked older man took shape, tall and lean. He had short white hair cropped close to his skull, thin lips pressed into a displeased scowl.

The black wolf beside him followed suit, revealing a naked woman who was curvy in every way he was lean, her lush pale face a mask of composure.

Body mages …

I tugged at my clothes, trying to cover myself with what few bits I still had on.
