“Really?”

“What? I’ve had those for years. I ain’t getting rid of them.”

Closing it a little more forcefully than I should have, I halted my movements and stilled. We weren’t supposed to be here. King was rather insistent that we hole up at the distillery. I got that the security was better in that place, but I’d be damned to hell before I let Eugene die on my watch.

Even though the big baby was supposed to be watching me.

Hearing nothing, I opened the third drawer and smiled.

Eureka!

Removing the orange cap, I said, “Pull ’em down, Eugene.”

“What!” He gasped, slapping his hand over his mouth, shaking his head profusely, making his muffled reply barely audible.

“Ain’t happening.”

Smirking, I strolled over to him while he scooted toward the headboard.

“You can’t do it yourself. You don’t like needles, remember?”

“’Cause they hurt,” he sneered, narrowing his eyes.

“Stop being a baby. I promise it won’t hurt.”

Chapter Five

Enigma

She lied.

It hurt like hell.

Grumbling, I rubbed my leg. “Did you have to hit the bone?”

“Stop whining,” she muttered, looking at her phone as she thumbed through pictures of her boys.

Scooting closer, I laid my head next to hers. “Sean’s gotten big.”

“Yeah, he has.”

“Cameron talks about Benny all the time,” I stated, grinning when I saw her oldest and Cameron smiling at the camera.

“He’s Benjamin’s best friend. Those two are always getting into trouble at school. Can’t tell you how many times I’ve been called to the principal’s office. Haven’t been in school in ages, and yet, I’ve seen more of that office than when we were kids.”

“Cameron is a handful.”

“So is Ben.”

“You know the boys are safe, right?”

“I know,” she whispered. “I just miss them. Mom wanted me to go home with her this year, but I couldn’t because I needed to finish Scribe and Henley’s cake. Plus, I wanted to watch them get married. I’m so happy Henley found her one.”

“Gotta admit, I never thought Henley would leave her cabin. She was always so shy in school.”

“That’s because Zach bullied her. Asshole got what he deserved in the end. Wish someone would take care of my bully like that.”

“Is that what you want?” I asked, shocked to hear her talk like that. Sugar was always a sweet girl; she had a wicked temper, sure, but the girl I knew would never want to see someone hurt. If anything, she would be the first to stand up and protect them.
