“Don’t know what you are talking about.”

“The fuck you don’t, bee-boy.” She smirked, getting to her feet. “You finally told Sugar the truth. You told her you’re in love with her.”

“So what if I did?!” I shouted angrily.

It was none of Devlyn’s business what I told Shug.

In fact, it was nobody’s business but my own.

Devlyn sighed. “Shit. This isn’t good.”

“What do you mean?”

“Eugene, have you ever asked yourself why Sugar never dated after the shit with John went down?”

“No. Just thought she needed time to heal.”

“Of course you would think that, and technically, you are partially right. Sugar doesn’t date anyone because she’s afraid of what this town will say.”

“That’s bullshit. No one cares who she dates.”

“The hell they don’t,” Devlyn snipped loudly. “This fucking town is worse than Peyton Place! If you haven’t noticed, this town is very vocal when it comes to other people’s relationships. Hell, man, Bailey still gets comments about her relationship with King, and they are married. Half the town thinks Sarah trapped Gunner, and don’t even get me started on what they say about Skylar. But the worst of it is about Henley. My sweet, loveable sister. This town ridicules and demeans her when none of you are around because of her former job. Did you know there is a petition going around to stop her from becoming a kindergarten teacher? Some parents think she’s not an exemplary role model.”

Gulping, I asked. “What do they say about Sugar?”

“You mean the whore of Rosewood?”

Jumping to my feet, I roared, “She’s not a whore!”

“I never said she was. It’s what they call her.”

“Who calls her that?”

Devlyn looked at me as if I were the stupidest person on the planet. “Everyone. But I’ll give you one fucking guess who is leading the charge.”

“Martha.”

“That’s right. Martha-fucking-Cohen. The mouthiest bitch of Rosewood. She’s made no bones about it. She fucking hates your club. She’s been trying for years to get the town to order some kind of injunction to have you guys removed. When that didn’t work, she moved on to the women. That woman is relentless. If she can’t take the club down, she’s determined to destroy the girls.”

“Dev’s right, Enigma,” Banks said, standing in the doorway. “Martha Cohen has a hard-on for the club because of what happened to Margaret.”

“What does Margaret have to do with this?” I asked, more confused than ever. Margaret Cohen was the only daughter of Martha Cohen, who died in a horrible car accident one night while driving drunk.

“Martha blames King for what happened to Margaret.”

“Oh, for crying out loud!” I shouted. “King was in the military when the accident happened. Everyone knows Margaret was drinking and driving.”

“We know that, Eugene,” Dev groaned. “But Martha doesn’t care. She blames King. That’s why she’s hell-bent on destroying the club.”

“And since she can’t get to us, she’s moved onto the women.”

“Does King know?”

“Yeah.” Banks nodded. “But so far, everything that’s happened is purely speculation. He has no evidence that it’s Martha behind all the threats.”

Looking at my brother, I asked, “She’s threatening Shug, isn’t she?”

“Yeah. Has been ever since Sugar married John Stanley. That union caused a major uproar in the community.”
