I guess I was a lot more like my sister than I thought, because, like Lidi, I was in love with my best friend. The one girl who always had my back, knew all my secrets, knew all my fears. There wasn’t a memory I had in my head that didn’t have Sugar in it.

She was the one person who saw the real me, just like I saw her.

Holding her, comforting her, no words needed to be spoken.

No excuse required.

Her sorrows became mine. I willingly gave myself to her.

Stroking her back, I said nothing in the darkness of my room.

Her tears gradually stopped, and her breathing soon slowed. Whatever storm raged inside her had passed.

Still, she clung to me.

“I’ve got you, Shug,” I whispered into the night. “I’ve always got you.”

Cradled in my embrace, I comforted her with my words.

“I’ve got you.”

Slowly pulling away, she looked up at me. “I’m sorry.”

“Nothing to be sorry for, Shug,” I said, stroking her back. “Wanna talk about it?”

She shook her head. “No.”

“I can’t fix it unless you tell me.”

“There are some things you can’t fix, Eugene,” she stated flatly, turning away from me as she lay on her back, looking at the ceiling. The silence between us was comforting, familiar. Many times, we would just lay next to each other, looking up at the stars, saying nothing. We didn’t need words. Just being with each other was enough.

“Eugene?”

“Yeah.”

“Do you ever wish you could go back to a specific time and do everything different?”

Sighing, I rested my hands behind my head. “I don’t know. I guess it depends on the time. Why?”

“No reason,” she mumbled.

When she said nothing more, I spoke, “I believe everything happens for a reason. We may not like it, but there is nothing we can do to change it. All we can do is just live with what life has given us and hope that someday we get a second chance.”

“I think I would like that. A second chance. A chance to do everything right.”

Turning on my side, I looked at her. “Shug, everything about you is perfect. Don’t sell yourself short. Anyone worth their salt can see how wonderful you are.”

“You mean that?”

“Have I ever lied to you?”

“I’ve missed you,” she whispered, reaching up to cup my face.

Kissing the palm of her hand, I whispered back, “I’m right here, Shug. Always have been. Always will be.”
