“She won’t accept my claim,” I growled.

“What?”

“Why?”

“Because Martha Cohen is threatening her,” King muttered, then added, “In fact, Martha has been threatening all our women.”

“Excuse me?”

“What the fuck!”

“I only found out about it after the shit went down with Henley and that stupid website. I’ve been monitoring the situation, and so has Mike, but with this shit going on with Claudia and Sugar, the woman has been spreading rumors like wildfire around town to anyone who will listen. Mike and I have this handled.”

“Not good enough,” I stated, crossing my arms over my chest. “Sugar won’t even look me in the eye, King. She’s afraid and it’s not just what John Stanley will do to her. She’s being attacked from all sides. This shit stops right fucking now.”

“Enigma’s right,” Gunner added. “Sugar’s not had it easy. Hell, brother, you were in the military and didn’t see the crap that went down, but the rumors started flying right after she graduated high school. One minute she was just a townie, the next a pariah. Then shit got really bad after she married fuckface and had Benny. Poor girl gets beat by her own husband and the town blames her. Says she deserved it. That ain’t right.”

“I know Gunner.” King sighed, looking down at his hands. “I’ve heard all the rumors. I know what they say, and I agree with you. It’s not right.”

Narrowing my eyes at King, I slammed my hands down on his desk and yelled, “Only you can fucking fix this shit, King. So, fix it!”

King looked up at me and his eyes widened a fraction before he steeled his face, I fucking knew he knew exactly what the hell I was talking about.

Saying nothing more, I turned and left the office, needing to speak with Sugar.

Chapter Ten

Sugar

I was lying on Eugene’s bed, reading a book, when he stormed in, slamming the door behind him. Laying the book down, I said nothing as he paced his room back and forth. I would have made some snarky comment to get a chuckle out of him, but I could tell he wasn’t in a laughing mood.

Sitting up, I asked, “Wanna talk about it?”

“Why didn’t you tell me what Martha Cohen has been saying?”

Talking a deep breath, I replied, “Because it’s my problem, not yours.”

“That’s bullshit, Sugar, and you fucking know it. We don’t keep secrets from each other. We tell each other everything. Why didn’t you tell me?”

Getting to my feet, I walked over to him, standing my ground. “Because there is nothing you can do. Martha is a bitter old woman. She lost her only daughter and blames everyone.”

“You had nothing to do with that,” he growled.

“You’re right. I didn’t. Martha has never liked me and has been vocal about it for years. Why is this a problem now?”

“Because I want to claim you.”

Stepping back, I shook my head. “No. You can’t.”

Crowding me, he snarled, “Don’t tell me what I can and can’t do, Shug.”

“Eugene, listen to me. I’m not what you want.”

Grabbing my shoulders, he yanked me toward him. “You are exactly what I want.”

Before I could reply, Eugene slammed his mouth down on my lips in a crushing kiss. I sighed, sinking into him as he reached up and stroked my back. The thought of that first kiss didn’t go away. But this kiss. The way he held me. His control hanging on by a thread, opened a reality I never knew existed. Now, the thought of us together in more than a friendship capacity refused to go away.

The heat of his touch scorched my body as I gave into his desires.
