“That’s true.” My mom smiled, then added, “But remember one thing, sweetheart. The sun always comes out after a storm.”

That was for damn sure.

Giving me a kiss on the cheek, my mom couldn’t leave before being a mom herself. “Now, don’t work too much. You’re supposed to be relaxing and enjoying your time away from the boys.”

“I won’t. I only have Scribe and Henley’s wedding cake to finish. Once it’s delivered, I’m closing the shop for a week and doing absolutely nothing.”

Giving my mom a quick hug, I walked her to the door and stood there waving at my boys as my dad pulled out of the driveway.

Sighing, I said nothing as I watched the truck disappear out of sight.

One week.

For the next week, I was all alone.

God, I couldn’t wait to take a nap.

I had just put the topper on the cake when I heard someone knocking on the glass door of my little shop.

Like most of the residents in Rosewood, I owned and operated my own shop, Sugar’s Creamery. The best ice cream parlor around for a hundred miles. What made my little piece of sugary sweetness stand out was that I created all the flavors. None of that Baskin Robbins stuff. Nope, every delicious scoop was a creation of my making.

It was a gift.

I was good at knowing what people wanted.

Just like the cake I was making for Scribe and Henley. After seeing those two together, I just knew what kind of tasty, delicious cake they would want, and when they asked me to make their wedding cake, I told them to leave everything to me.

Sighing, I shook my head, mumbling under my breath as I reached for a hand towel before storming out of my kitchen for the front door. “What part of closed, don’t they understand?”

Seeing the new sheriff, Beth’s husband, Mike, standing at the front door, I stopped for a second, frowning.

Unlocking the door, I opened it just as Mike removed his hat.

“Hi, Mike. Everything okay?”

“Sugar, can I come in for a minute?”

Nodding, I stepped back, allowing the man to enter. When the man said nothing, the hairs on the back of my neck stood up. I could tell he didn’t want to be here.

Something was wrong.

“You’re scaring me, Mike.”

“Sugar, where are the boys?”

“With my parents. They left for Louisiana this morning. What’s happened?”

“Good,” Mike whispered, looking around my shop.

Getting more worried by the minute, I kept my eyes glued to the man.

“Sugar, there is no easy way to say this shit, so I’m just gonna say it, okay?”

“Alright.”

“Last week, John Stanley was released early because of overcrowding. He missed his first check-in with his parole officer. The State of Ohio has issued a warrant for his arrest. Until they apprehend him, you are in danger. I’ve already called King. He’s sending a brother to help watch over you. Is there some other place you can stay until he’s found?”

Shaking my head, I took a step back.
