Pierce frowned. “Let’s hear it.”

“I don’t know what to do next. To maximize the chances of conception, I mean. Do I need to, like, lay on my back with my legs against the wall? Will that help gravity work better?”

Pierce laughed richly. “I don’t think it works like that.”

“Sure, but shouldn’t we find out? There’s a lot of paperwork and money involved in conceiving your child.”

“It’ll be fine, I’m sure,” he said, gently peppering my face with kisses. “If we’re still worrying about this in a few months, then we can try every trick in the book.”

“Okay.” I kissed him one final time, then put an unsteady foot underneath myself and stood up.

And gasped as a trickle of semen ran out of my vagina and down my leg.

“Shit!” I said, panicking. “What should I do?”

Laughing, Pierce said, “It’s fine. Seriously.”

“But it’s falling out!”

He stood up, cupped my cheek, and gave me a reassuring kiss. “Trust me: I came a lot. There’s plenty still inside you to hopefully get the job done.”

“Okay.” I shivered.

He handed me a cloth towel. “Cold?”

“No,” I said while cleaning myself up. “Well, I mean, yes, a little. But I was shivering thinking about your sperm inside me. Swimming towards, hopefully, an egg.”

“I’m sure it’s weird doing this for real, after thinking about it for so long.”

“Yes! Exactly!” I agreed.

He took me in his arms and gave me a long hug. When he pulled away, he seemed concerned. “If you’re not ready, then it’s okay to say so. You can back out of the contract at any point.”

I gave a start. “Why would I want to back out?”

“If you suddenly realized you’re not ready,” Pierce explained while pulling his pants on. “I’ve been in a lot of situations in my life where I thought I was ready, but then balked at the starting gate. That’s okay, Melinda. I want you to be totally comfortable every step of the process. I didn’t offer you the contract with the hopes that I would come inside you once and then say ah hah, gotcha!”

I chuckled, then reached for my own clothes. “That’s nice to know. But it’s okay. I’m ready.”

“You’re sure?”

I nodded. “As sure as I’m ever going to be.”

The intercom on the wall crackled to life. “I’m ready to touch down on the island, Mr. Benning.”

Pierce gave me a confused look, then pressed the intercom button. “Why are you saying it like that?”

“Well, sir, there’s another helicopter occupying the landing zone. I assumed you knew about it.”

Pierce and I pressed our faces to the window. The island mansion was illuminated below us, a bright spot where the jungle met the beach. And sitting on the helicopter pad was another aircraft, this one emblazoned with the blue, white, and red Costa Rica flag. The rotors were still spinning.

“Who’s that?” I asked.

Pierce chuckled and shook his head. “I think I know who. I was expecting his visit sooner than now.” He pressed the intercom button. “Tell them to clear the pad for us to land.”

“Looks like they figured it out on their own,” the pilot replied. Sure enough, the helicopter was already rising into the air, banking sharply over the jungle to get out of our way.

By the time we touched down, both of us were fully dressed. The door to the helicopter was opened by a servant, and Pierce stepped onto firm ground and extended a hand to help me down. Three suited men were walking toward us, with Andrew and Tristan flanking them on each side.
