“Asshole,” Egan said. “What did she bring you?”

“I’m not saying and if you eat any I’ll know. I weighed it before I left.”

Egan was laughing even harder. “If I had a scale in the office I’m sure you would have. You’ve always been greedy with food.”

“You haven’t had to eat some of the shit I did in the service,” he said. “And you do have a scale in the office. The postage meter.”

He saw Egan’s smile drop, which told him that his buddy was going to try to sneak some of his food.

Egan had done it before when others had brought him food. He knew and never said a word. It’d be a bite here and there as if Lincoln wouldn’t know.

He knew everything.

“Jerk,” Egan said. “What is going on with you and Grace?”

“Nothing,” he said. “I flew her over and she brought me food.”

“Twice in a month,” Egan said. “And she asked you to get a drink with her. Like a date.”

“Nooooo,” he said.

“Yessssss,” Egan said. “You can’t be this slow.”

Guess he didn’t know everything. “She was being friendly.”

“Grace Stone. My cousin Grace Stone? She’s not a friendly person to many.”

“Sure, she is,” he argued. “I’ve never seen otherwise.”

“I haven’t either. Not to family. She’s upfront and snarky at times. Just like my wife and we know how much I love that.”

“I don’t know that Grace is just like Blake.”

“And you’re thinking about it, which means you’ve talked to her enough to wonder,” Egan argued.

“What are you getting at?” he asked.

“That my cousin is throwing all sorts of darts your way and hasn’t hit the bullseye once.”

“I’d think that Grace was a straightforward enough person that if she wanted to ask me on a date, she would have.”

“Idiot,” Egan said. “She did.”

“Fuck!”

“What is that reaction?” Egan asked. “What’s wrong with my cousin?”

It must be the appalled look on his face that had Egan frowning. “Nothing is wrong with her. She’s stunning.”

Grace had jeans on today. A pair of baggy ones that were more for comfort than fashion he was guessing. She had a fitted cotton shirt tucked into her tiny waist. She didn’t have a jacket on but was carrying one on her arm. There were fashionable sneakers on her small feet and he watched her ass as she had her fast walk to the parking garage.

“Then go on a date with her.”

“I did by your explanation,” he said. And he felt a little like a fool for not seeing this before.

“Why not ask her on another?” Egan asked.

“I’m not positive the first was a real date,” he said, scratching his chin. He’d shaved yesterday and now that it was all growing back it was driving him nuts. He wasn’t sure why he didn’t just keep it trimmed.
