“When have you had a week off?” he asked.

“I took a week off when Kaden was born. I’m taking a week off for my honeymoon now that Blake realized Kaden will be fine without us for a week.”

He started to laugh. “You mean she had to convince you that Kaden would be fine withoutyoufor a week?”

He knew Egan hated leaving his son. He could understand that too.

“Whatever,” Egan said, waving his hand in an exaggerated fashion. “My mother is in heaven having her grandson for the week. I know Kaden will be fine.”

“He will,” Lincoln said. “I’ll go over and spend time with him. I’ll convince him to love me more than you so when you come back he comes to me first.”

“Asshole,” Egan said, laughing. “It won’t happen, but I know you’ll try. Why don’t you use that energy for the new chick you’re dating.”

“Did you just refer to your cousin as a chick?” he asked with his eyes wide. “I can’t wait to tell her that.”

Egan smirked. “You like her. I know you do. It’s the first thing you thought of just now. Running to her and ratting me out.”

He sighed. He couldn’t believe how he fell for that.

“Fine,” he said. “I like her. But we both have busy careers and I’m not sure when we are going to have time to see each other.”

“You’d have that problem with anyone. The fact she is in the same boat means she won’t be demanding. Did you stop to think that is a weight off her shoulders too to not worry about?”

“No,” he said. He wasn’t sure why he didn’t think of that.

“And you both have Tuesday off,” Egan said. “We can work your schedule so that you can have lighter days on Mondays or even Mondays off. You don’t need to work six days a week anymore.”

“Thanks,” he said. “I’ll let you know. I don’t think either one of us is ready to be spending that much time together.”

Egan laughed. “You’re talking yourself out of things rather than into them, but I’m not going to get on your case about it. It’s your life.”

“Gee, thanks,” he said, laughing.“Nowit’s my life.”

“It’s always been your life, but as your best friend I’m not going to sit by and let you throw something away either. Then again, on this island, fate and all, I don’t think you need my help.”

“Ass,” he said and walked out listening to Egan’s laughing.

His best friend did give him a shit ton to think about though and he could appreciate the fact that Egan was being flexible to allow him to spend time with Grace.

Lincoln supposed that was a major form of acceptance in the Bond family. Though it wasn’t the extended family he was worried about getting the acceptance from.

He’d had bad experiences with the parents of a woman he was in love with and that was all he was concerned about now.

He’d never put himself in that position again where he wasn’t accepted and had to spend so much energy to fight for something that ended up not being worth fighting for in the end.

THE VICTOR

“Good morning,” Grace said, walking into the hangar on Friday morning. Egan and he both looked up at the sound of her voice.

“Hey,” Lincoln said. He looked at his watch. “It’s seven thirty, what are you doing here so early?”

“Breakfast,” she said, lifting up the dish in her hand. She moved over to the counter, pulled the brown bag that was sitting on top of it off and took the lid off the dish. “French toast bake.” Then she opened the brown bag. “Bacon and egg waffle sandwiches. They are still hot but not for long. Figured they’d travel better since you’ll be in the air soon.”

Egan all but elbowed him out of the way as if it was the World Cup soccer match and he was going for the ball, then grabbed the bag out of his cousin’s hand. “You’ve never brought me food before. How come?”

Grace laughed as Lincoln wrestled the bag out of Egan’s hand, the two of them almost on the floor at this point as they were body-blocking the other and slapping hands in a game of flag football. Only the flag was this delicious scent of food that he was supposed to be getting.
