“Maybe you should keep your opinions to yourself too,” she said. “I don’t need you scaring anyone else away.”

This was news to him.

Grace stepped away carrying her kayak and he turned to Skyler. “You’re not easily scared are you?”

“No,” he said.

“Good. Don’t let her push you away.”

Maybe Skyler had actually done all of that for his benefit?

Was it possible this family was all that accepting?

STATING A FACT

“I’m so happy you’re home,” Lincoln’s mother said to him on Saturday morning as she slid a plate of pancakes in front of him and topped his coffee off.

No one-cup coffeemaker here. His parents drank it out of the pot and had several cups each morning.

He was guilty of the same. He hadn’t noticed at Grace’s that she ground her own beans until he’d gotten out of the shower on Tuesday after spending the night, and he’d smelled that over the food.

“Me too,” he said. Though he knew he might miss Grace he had to tell himself that was nuts.

He didn’t see her on the weekends. She was probably at work already and would be home after ten tonight. She worked until after ten last night too.

“It was nice of Egan to force you to take a few days off. Wish you didn’t have to leave on Monday though.”

His mother knew he had Tuesdays off, but by staying this long he couldn’t bring the helicopter and had to drive.

“I need to get Egan his car back.”

“Why did you drive that over your truck?” his father asked. “Is there something wrong with it?”

“No,” he said. “Egan was just saving me from putting my truck on the ferry and being locked to that schedule coming and going. His Range Rover sits in the parking garage most times anyway. He said it wasn’t a big deal. I had to leave my helicopter in Boston anyway so when my last flight was done, I just drove here.”

He saved an hour by leaving from Boston. The five-and-a-half-hour drive was bad enough, but once he got out of the city he was cruising pretty fast.

He’d arrived at his parents’ at midnight and it worked in his favor to not have much traffic.

“That was nice he let you do that too,” his mother said. “He seems like a great boss.”

“He is,” Lincoln said. “An even better friend. I’ll get back Monday afternoon and since I’m off Tuesday, my helicopter will stay in Boston so I’ll just fly over when he returns to the island. I’ve got to get there around one or I’ll be stuck until after seven when he’s done for the day.”

He’d like to get back home early afternoon so he could spend some time and the night with Grace.

It’s not like he could have asked her to come with him even if he wanted to. His mother would love it.

First he had to tell his mother about his girlfriend and get her up to speed.

“How has work been?” his father asked. “Sounds like you’re keeping busy. Busy enough it’s been hard for you to come home.”

“I am,” he said. “When it was just the two of us if I wanted to come home I could take a helicopter for a quick trip. Now that there are other pilots, someone is using my aircraft when I’m off.”

“I’m sure it’s nice to just have a set day off a week now,” his mother said.

“Two days,” he said. “Every Monday and Tuesday. I’m on call those nights but most times don’t get a call.”
