He was pretty sure she wouldn’t let it slide too long though.

“That isn’t what I meant,” his mother asked. “Does she know about Lara?”

“No,” he said. “It’s in the past. I don’t tell everyone my dating history. Least of all someone from high school.”

He was so used to giving himself that line of bullcrap that he almost believed it himself.

“This is different and you know it,” his father said.Guess his parents didn’t believe it though.

“I ran into her mother the other day in the store,” his mother said.

He let out a sigh. “I hope she at least walked the other way rather than saying something nasty to you.”

“I can handle myself,” his mother asked. “I asked about Lara.”

“Why?” he asked.

“Because she all but cornered me and it was the right thing to do. At one point you two planned on getting married.”

He snorted. “I doubt it would have ever happened.”

He’d learned that fast enough.

All he’d been was an outlet for Lara to escape what she considered controlling parents. But he was positive Lara would have caved and gone to college, probably met another guy that fit her image. Or gave her a way out of town that she wanted so badly.

He was her ticket out and when it didn’t work the way she wanted then he was the enemy.

In his mind, the fool.

Not many want to admit they’d been a sucker to the current woman they were with.

“You don’t know that,” his father said.

“I do,” he said. “She didn’t love me, only the idea of what I represented. A way out.”

There was no way Lara could have handled his life in the service. It wouldn’t be posh enough for her.

Not that he wanted things to happen the way they had, but sometimes fate just stepped in and gave you a punch to the gut.

“What was that look for?” his mother asked.

“What look?”

“You just had a half smile on your face. Why?”

“I did?” he asked. He hadn’t realized it.

“You did. Are you thinking of Grace? Do you have a picture of her you can share at least?”

He pulled his phone out of his pocket, found a picture he’d taken of her in the kitchen on Tuesday while she was cooking. She was laughing when he said he needed it because he planned on telling his parents about her.

He thought for sure she might be worried it was moving too fast, but she only joked that it was about time since her entire family knew and was questioning her at the wedding.

Then she joked he’d be by her side for Carter’s.

That was her way of asking. It was just assumed and he’d go with it. No reason not to.

He wanted to see her all dressed up anyway.
