“There isn’t much more to say, Grace. You know what I did. You can imagine the things I saw.”

She sighed and reached her hand over to his. No reason to push when he took stubbornness to a whole new level. “I don’t want to think of you in the line of fire. You could have been hurt or gotten killed.”

“That’s right,” he said. “It’s in the past though. It’s what we signed up for and knew.”

“I’ve seen the scars on you. You’ve never been shot, right?”

“No,” he said. “No scars from that, but I’ve got a lot of cuts and bruises from training and recon and fighting.”

“Some scars aren’t seen on the flesh,” she said.

“No,” he said softly. “They aren’t. And it’s not something that we need to talk about now. There are other things. Do you want to know what Egan said?”

“Sure,” she said. She didn’t want to change the subject, but he was right and it wasn’t what she should be focused on. Maybe it was better to not know anything he went through. At least right now.

“Egan said they asked a lot of questions about the island in general. They wanted shots not just of The Retreat but also Bond Casino, the Main Street. They wanted a partial tour that we’d give. They got the whole coastline from The Retreat to the casino.”

“Oh,” she said. “This all sounds like I’m a contestant as a way to give them more information to decide on whatever Hailey and Bella are proposing. The whole coastline shows a lot of family-owned businesses.”

“That is Egan’s feeling on it. He knows more of what was proposed because Eli has mentioned it.”

Though she doubted Egan knew it all. He only owned a small portion of the casino along with Ethan. Mitchell had a bigger portion.

“It’s beautiful out here tonight,” she said, finishing off her glass of wine and setting it down.

“It is,” he said. “You need the distraction, right?”

“I do,” she said. “Why don’t we go back in the house and you can distract me another way.”

He stood up and put his hand out for hers. “Food,” he said. “I’m always hungry.”

She laughed. “I can do that too,” she said.

She picked up her empty glass and they made their way to the kitchen. She was trying to think of what to make. She’d use some of Katy’s vegetables with dinner too.

When they got in the kitchen, she opened the fridge, but Lincoln turned her around and pulled her in his arms. “I’m hungry for you.”

“That’s good,” she said. “Because I feel the same way.”

He moved past her to the door of her pantry, pulled out an apron and handed it over. Her confusion must have shown on her face.

“I want you to wear this.”

“I don’t need to wear one,” she said, letting out a snort.

“But I want you to. With nothing on under it.”

She started to laugh. “Now that is a way to get my mind off of what is going on.”

“You’re okay with it?” he asked.

“I am,” she said. “And I’m going to cook that way for you too. Might as well wind you up.”

She’d never done this before, but it’d be fun.

She grabbed the apron and went into the half bath off the living room, undressed down to her birthday suit and put the red apron on over it.

The cool air on her ass reminded her that she wasn’t covered by anything there.
