I stared at him.

“I kind of didn’t tell her anything before we arrived down here. Just told her I needed her, and it’s a life-and-death situation.”

A new bout of anger swept through my body like a gust of strong wind.

“You’re good for her, though. She seemed almost like her old feisty self today.” He grinned. “She got a little overwhelmed there for a moment, that’s why I touched her…” He let that fact hang in the air.

Here I was. Eating my words. When I threatened him for touching her, he was actually just grounding her to keep her from spinning out of control.

I rubbed my hand over my face and exhaled.

“How about you set up a meeting with whoever you deem most influential and essential in the Moretti organization, so you can formally make a plan?” Gabe said.

“Because Alex here, has some groveling to do right now.” Gabe grinned at me, and I glared at him.

He was enjoying this. Probably was happy for once it wasn’t him that was fucking it up.

“Let’s do that, and let’s do it here again,” Franco said. “Since that no-weapons rule is so firmly executed.” He raised his eyebrows at me.

Gabe chuckled.

“Good,” I said and stood. “Now, if you’ll excuse me, I’m urgently needed elsewhere.”

I turned to the door—the same one that Zotov still blocked with his body.

I squared off with him. And he held my gaze for a moment too long before he moved to the side.

“I’m pretty sure we’ll meet each other again, soon,” was all he said.

I cocked my head. It sounded ominous. And like a promise. And not in a good way. But right now, I didn’t have time to sort through the mess.

Right now, I needed to get home to my princess, take her in my arms, and make love to her until her sassiness evaporated and she was ready and willing to forgive me—again.

Until she was ready to listen and believe me when I told her I was on my way to falling for her.

CHAPTER THIRTY-TWO

The darkness wrapped around me like a cold, sinister blanket as Matteo and I sped through the night in Alex’s Ferrari.

My heart still pounded from the confrontation at the sex club—the way he looked at me.

So cold, so dismissive.

Alex’s harsh words echoed in my mind; his anger and distrust had cut me to the bone. After everything we’d been through, he still didn’t trust me. He still believed the worst and wouldn’t even listen. And it wasn’t enough to dismiss me without a second thought and send me away like a child, but he’d also judged me, believing the worst about me.

A lump formed in my throat as unwanted tears pricked at my eyes. I swallowed hard, blinking them away. I wouldn’t give him the satisfaction of making me cry. I should’ve learned my lesson. Instead, here I was, still hoping to be good enough to be accepted, loved, and believed.

“Fee, listen,” Matteo said softly, glancing at me, his voice steady even as we raced down the winding roads in the pitch-black darkness that surrounded us the minute we’d left the city. “Alex will come around. You know how he is—he gets all hot-headed, and once he’s calmed down, he realizes he’s been an ass jumping to conclusions. He’ll apologize.”

I scoffed, crossing my arms over my chest. “You think so?” I leaned my head against the window and sighed. “And even if so…” I stared outside. “He wouldn’t even give me a chance to explain. He just…sent me away like I was nothing. This was a mistake.”

Maybe, despite last night and this morning, we weren’t such a good match after all.

Should’ve known that.

We had a mighty rocky start. The hints were all there.

His meanness, his hot temper. First impressions are almost always right.
