What the hell?

I looked him over. His face looked okay—no sign of any trauma from hitting the steering wheel.

Fuck.

I stared up at the vehicle. The windshield was broken. Was this not an accident but an ambush? Was all of this a trap to get to me?

“Damn you, Franco,” I growled under my breath.

That bastard had lied. The meeting had been a setup. It had to have been the Morettis.

But why?

“Stay with me, Matt,” I whispered, pressing my hands against the wound to staunch the flow of blood. “You’re going to make it! You hear me?”

I inhaled, pushed through the overwhelming pressure in my chest, and fought against the tears gathering behind my eyelids.

Breaking down wouldn’t help.

I looked up again, my gaze darting around, searching for a sign of Fee. She wasn’t in the car. Or anywhere around.

If she were conscious and able to, she would’ve stayed with Matt. She wouldn’t have wandered off. Wouldn’t have left him. Not by her own free will.

So that left only one solution.

Panic gripped me, choking off any rational thought. The Morettis must’ve taken her…

To hurt me? To pressure me? Why?

Without wasting another second, I pulled out my phone and dialed Gabe’s number while keeping the pressure on Matt’s abdomen.

Gabe picked up on the second ring. “Wha?—”

“Listen! There’s been an accident. Matt’s been shot. Fee’s missing. I need you to?—”

“Calm down,” Gabe said, his voice steady. “We see the flames—almost there. Just hang in there for a sec.”

“We need to find her,” I pleaded, my voice cracking. “Please.”

“We will find out what happened,” Gabe said, his calm voice an antidote to the terror burning inside my veins.

While I waited for help, I focused on Matt, doing everything I could to keep him alive—including praying.

The scorching heat from the Ferrari’s flaming wreckage licked at my skin, but it was nothing compared to the searing pain in my chest threatening to suffocate me.

The seconds felt like hours, and doubt gnawed at me, threatening to consume me whole. I couldn’t lose them—not Fee, and definitely not my best friend.

“Stay with me,” I whispered to Matt, feeling his life slipping through my fingers like sand while I was completely helpless. “I need you.”

Sirens wailed in the distance. I kept pressure on Matteo’s wound, hoping to slow the bleeding, focusing all of my energy into my hands.

Willing him to live.

My brother, my best friend—if he died, how could I go on? I should never have let them out of my sight.

This was all because of me. Because of my stupid temper. Because of my stupid trust issues.

“Stay with me, Matt,” I begged through gritted teeth, struggling to keep my emotions in check. My heart pounded like a jackhammer, fear and anger warring within me. How could I have let things spiral so out of control? I should’ve been there for Fee, for Matt.
