I nodded, stood, and walked outside the waiting room. My eyes met Sophie’s, then Cristo’s and Cara’s. When had they all arrived?

Outside, Gabe pulled me aside, his expression grim.

“I spoke to Franco Moretti,” he said quietly. “He swears it wasn’t his family behind the attack. But he’s offered to help find out who’s responsible.”

I slammed my fist into the wall, welcoming the added physical pain.

Gabe gave me that big-brother look only he could muster. “Pull it together, asshole.”

I glared at him.

“Also, I called the Salvini family to let them know Matt is in critical condition. I didn’t go into any details, but Vince is on his way.”

I nodded. Matt’s family should be here.

A heavy weight squeezed my chest. “I should have protected them,” I whispered, ashamed. “This is all my fault.” My hands curled into fists at my sides before I groaned and loosened them again. And ignored Gabe’s narrowed brows as he stared at me.

“I have to find her. I have to get her back.”

Gabe clasped my shoulder. “We’ll get her back, Alex. I promise.”

I slumped against the wall. “If it’s not the Morettis who took her, then who? Who would even know she was in the car?” I said, then watched Franco Moretti hurry toward us.

“Where’s Fee?” he said when he reached us.

Gabe shrugged. “The details are still unclear.”

Franco glared at me. “You—” he spat, then stopped because Sophie and Cara came running, and everyone turned toward them.

“We just got off the phone with Jemma,” Sophie said, and Cara nodded.

“They’re with Uncle Connor, and she overheard a conversation. Fee’s on a flight back home.”

I sucked in air as the words settled in.

Fee was safe.

It was her own family who took her.

“Apparently, news spread about Fee and you dating,” Sophie said and glared at me. “And Uncle Connor is furious.”

“Fuck.”

Sophie nodded. “Also, there’s one more thing.” She sucked in air through her teeth. “It seems like they mistook Matteo for you.”

She stopped there, her gaze locked with mine. And then the meaning of her words hit me like a bullet.

Matt had been shot.

A gut shot.

A likely fatal wound.

They thought he was me. So their intention was to kill me. I should’ve been furious.

Instead, I felt calm.

Matt’s bullet was intended for me because I’d taken Fee as mine. Because I dated Fee. Because I loved Fiona Donnelly. And her family didn’t like it at all.
