The impact knocked him down, along with me. Strong arms wrapped around me, held me tightly, and I landed spread-eagled above a very muscular, very hard human body, my nose bouncing off his extremely hard chest, pain exploding in my face.

I slowly raised my head, then opened one eye and looked up into Alex’s stormy dark eyes.

Relief flooded me like a tidal wave.

“Alex,” I whispered before my body suddenly went limp against him while I broke out in giggles—along with tears welling up in my eyes uncontrollably.

“Fuck, Fee, what the hell are you doing?” he said, wrapping his arms tighter around me, cupping my head with his hand, and pressing me against his chest and neck.

I closed my eyes and clung to him, and his scent wrapped around me like a familiar blanket.

Finally safe. Finally home.

“Are you hurt?” he asked, his voice a mixture of anger and concern.

But before I could answer, I could hear the sound of footsteps approaching.

We had to move—fast.

“We need to run,” I whispered, raising my head and locking my eyes with his.

Then I reconsidered. “I need you to carry me, though, because my legs are not working.”

From up close, the storm brewing in his eyes was a magnificent sight to behold.

“You can’t feel your legs?” The panic lacing his voice was strangely soothing but also completely unnecessary.

“My legs are fine,” I said and pushed myself up and into a standing position. Why was his body harder than I remembered?

He stood up, as well, then faced me and cupped my face, his eyes still troubled.

“Everything’s fine.”

I could feel people gathering all around us. I could hear shouting and see armed men advancing toward us from the corner of my eyes.

So technically, not everything was fine. Technically, we were doomed.

And we needed to escape.

But getting Alex to stop worrying was strangely more important right now.

His eyes darkened even more. “Your nose is bleeding.”

I touched below my nose, and my finger came away bloody. He grabbed a tissue and dabbed at my face.

Not the reunion I’d imagined.

CHAPTER FORTY

The moment I saw Fiona jump, my heart nearly leapt out of my chest.

I’d expected a lot coming here but not this—not seeing the love of my life jump out of a window in hopes of landing in a tree.

Maybe I should’ve called. Should’ve told her I was coming.

Fuck.

I wrapped my arms tighter around her body and inhaled her scent, and relief coursed through me like a torrent.
