Finally.

She raised her head, then looked up as if she wasn’t expecting me. “Alex?” Then her body went limp before she started shaking. Was she crying or laughing? Or having a seizure?

“Fuck, Fee, what the hell are you doing?” I cupped her head and pressed her against me for a second, stabilizing her neck.

“Are you hurt?”

She struggled against me, and I loosened my grip so she could raise her head and look at me again.

She looked okay, apart from the blood trickling from her nose.

“We need to run. I need you to carry me, though, because my legs are not working.”

“You can’t feel your legs?” I rasped, my voice rough because my throat was suddenly tight.

“My legs are fine,” she said, pushing against my chest, and jumping up into a standing position as if it were nothing.

I took a deep breath, then got up, as well. Not nearly as graciously as she did.

She was facing me, smiling at me, the red smear stark against her pale skin.

I cupped her cheek, tilted her chin up to get a better look though it seemed the bleeding had already stopped.

“Everything’s fine,” was all she said, her lips quirking up into a smile like a lunatic, the adrenaline coursing through her body probably preventing her from feeling any pain.

“Your nose is bleeding.”

She touched her face and stared at her bloody finger while Vince, who was standing right beside me, his weapon drawn, handed me a tissue as if facing off your enemies was just a daily occurrence.

I dabbed at the blood, then followed Vince’s line of sight to the window Fee just jumped out of.

There was a bald boy with a strip of green hair, but as soon as he saw we were looking at him, he disappeared.

The branch Fiona had jumped onto lay cracked on the ground beside us. What the hell was she thinking? I wanted to shake her for being so reckless, but all I could do was stare back at Fiona’s beautiful face.

Alive. Safe.

Even with a bloody nose, she was the most amazing woman I’d ever met. How could I have been so stupid not to tell her how I felt?

A door to the house opened, and a flood of armed guards exited the building.

“Take cover,” I shouted, grabbed Fiona, and dragged her with me to a stone sculpture that looked like a monolith.

I just hoped it was as sturdy as one.

I looked sideways. Vince, Cristo, and the rest of our men had taken cover behind the stone wall we’d passed earlier.

There had been an unexpected power outage before, which made it surprisingly easy to breach the outer parameters of the premises.

“What’s going on here?” A gruff voice interrupted my thoughts.

Fiona flinched, and I immediately pushed her behind me, shielding her with my body.

I peeked around the stone, and my gaze locked onto Connor Donnelly, Fiona’s father.

Fury ignited within me. This man was responsible for nearly killing Matteo. And here he was, just a few feet away, in an expensive suit, his whole persona authoritative.

The asshole was so sure of himself, he didn’t even find it necessary to take cover.
