I looked up at him, and there was a smile on his lips now. “You’re a lunatic,” I whispered, my throat completely choked up.

He winked, then he let me go. “Only for you.”

I shook my head, but inwardly, I was dying. He would get himself killed. For what? Me?

“You run toward Vince and Cristo when I tell you to run.”

I nodded.

But the order never came.

Alex stepped out from behind our cover.

My heart stopped beating when a single shot rang through the air, and Alex went down immediately.

I cried out, stumbled forward. I caught a glimpse of my father, who stood there, his arm raised, gun in hand—before Zotov took it.

My father shot Alex.

My throat tightened and I focused back on Alex… so close.

I took a step but fell down when my knees gave out.

And then all hell broke loose.

Bullets flew over my head, and I pressed myself as close to the ground as I could, my eyes firmly on Alex.

Was he dead? Where was he hit?

Memories of Matt being shot invaded my mind. I shook them off, then crawled towards Alex.

This was not happening again.

I wouldn’t allow it.

CHAPTER FORTY-TWO

“Enough.” Zotov’s booming voice reverberated across the battlefield, and the ensuing silence was deafening.

I sat up and caught a glimpse of Connor Donnelly favoring his left foot with blood running from his thigh—before Fee tackled me back to the ground, and I saw stars for a second.

She struggled with the buttons of my coat, tears streaming across her face, uncontrollable sobs wracking her body.

“Fee?”

She didn’t stop. Instead, she started ripping my buttons clean off.

“Princess, I’m fine.” I grabbed her hands and stilled them against my chest.

She sat back on her haunches and stared at me. “You were shot.”

I chuckled, released her hands, then opened my shirt and showed her the reason for her bloody nose.

“Bulletproof vest,” she mumbled, then stared at me for a couple of seconds.

Then she hit against it. “That’s why you were so hard upon landing.”

I chuckled. “You think I would come to your rescue without my armor? I’m not that bad of a hero.”
