But I held up a hand. “Don’t lie. I’ll give you one chance and only one to tell the truth and save yourself. One. So, let’s try this again. Why were you following us?”

His facade crumbled like a house of cards.

Bingo.

“I…I was hired…to keep tabs on you…and to find out who the woman was,” he spilled the beans, his voice barely above a whisper.

My expression didn’t change, but anger swept through me like liquid fire.

I inhaled carefully, then exhaled.

A deadly calm washed over me. “Who hired you?” Something told me I knew exactly who hired him—the same men who organized the attack on the Castello, the only men who wanted me dead right now.

The Moretti family.

The man’s lips moved soundlessly, his eyes filled with terror.

He was scared, and rightly so. He should have thought of the consequences before he decided to mess with me or Fee.

I sighed, exchanged the scalpel for an electrical saw, and turned to Matt. “Hold him,” I commanded.

The man began to scream as Matteo unfastened his hand and seized his wrist, but the sound was swallowed by the ocean. Same as the screams of pain when I brought down the saw. And made sure to leave a clear message—no one dared mess with me or what was mine. Not without paying the price.

“Tell your client I’m not amused,” I said, while I watched Matt put a tourniquet on him. I needed him alive long enough to convey the message. “And tell them I’m waiting.”

With that, I grabbed the purse and left with Matt hot on my heels.

CHAPTER NINE

Ihonestly thought after the day I’d had I would be too tired to do anything more than fall face-first into my bed and sleep until noon. But somehow, my little dinner with Mr. Cocky had me vibrating with nervous energy.

“You better start eating or I will put you on my lap and feed you.”

Holy crap.

Just thinking about the way he looked at me, with those dark and dangerous eyes, had my parts throbbing, my body vibrating, and my mind running as if I’d downed Molly.

Which was why I took a taxi back to Valletta to meet Frank and the old clique for a little private party at a beach club.

Thanks, Mr. Cocky, for giving me back my freedom in form of a tablet and a credit card.

I chuckled when I exited the cab and looked at the fancy building, then down at my cropped jeans skirt and glittery top.

Thanks, Mr. Cocky for insisting on buying me banging clothes, as well.

Now, if only he would stop occupying my brain—that would be awesome.

I shook my head as if I could dislodge the grip he had on my thoughts, then straightened. I was ready to light this night on fire and forget all about him.

Bonus point… I would defy Alex who told me to go to bed after watching me eat with those sultry, dark eyes of his.

Damn overbearing Italian macho man—take this.

I entered the beach club, and it was like its own island paradise. The pool seemed like it was built into the rocks. The water was a rich turquoise, well-lit, and illuminated the surrounding areas where lounge chairs and tables were scattered around. The club was empty aside from the chill music and laughter coming from a small group, hovering at one side of the area.

“Fee.” The shrill shriek was unmistakable.

I smiled and walked towards the group. I hadn’t seen Nina—one of my best friends in boarding school—in ages.
