Page 96 of Adam

She stands and walks up to the café counter to order another espresso light cream. I know how exhausted her used body is feeling. The side of my lip perks up with lust. She leans over, pointing to the baked goods. Her leg lifts slightly, shifting her dress, showing more of the perfect curves of her legs.

Another body drops into the seat next to my contact. I gaze over and groan in anguish.

“Kevin,” I say. I know who it is without taking my eyes off my psycho.

“Adam,” he says, laying a black Sharpie on the table.

Relenting, I stare at it for a moment before looking up. Donald looks between the two of us and lets out a huff.

“Fuck!” he whispers. “What did you get into?”

“I’m in deep,” Kevin tells us.

“Lay it out.” I place my hand on the table as a warning. My fingers trace around the spoon that lies used next to Reese's plate. “But don’t get it twisted. You come to interrupt my peace, and I will gouge your eyes out and feed them to Donald.”

“Why do you have to bring me in this?” Donald huffs. For a big guy, he’s fun to toy with.

I look down to collect myself before I continue. "You did a shit job at finding Allison."

“I said…” He starts to talk, but I tune him out. Something else catches my eye.

I look over to see a man approaching Reese. “Two minutes. You have two minutes, Kevin.”

Turning back, I give this man the attention that he clearly needs.

“Bailey,” he starts.

“The weirdo?” I clarify.

His jaw clenches at my statement. I can almost hear him grinding his teeth. “Yeah, her, she’s in deep with the Irish.”

Donald and I look at Kevin in confusion. How did something so weird get involved with the Irish?

“I need a back door in case things go to shit,” Kevin states.

I take in his whole appearance. It’s been a while since I’ve seen him. It’s been nothing but radio silence from his side, but seeing him here now, he means business. He’s dressed in a dark-blue three-piece suit with a gray button-up shirt. His hair is slicked back and his barely there beard is enough to show how tedious he is about the way it looks. This was not the man that was left broken at the beach. The man who was lost among the wild sits in front of me like a man consumed. What’s haunted him in the past is now buried. The shadows in his eyes are far more terrifying. He is not fearful anymore. He looks to be in complete control. A man in complete control is also a man who knows he has nothing to lose.

“I need to know more about Bailey. There are things I am missing.” Kevin’s eyes scan to Donald. “I know you gave her my name.”

Donald looks guilty as hell, and I grip the spoon, holding it up to him.

“What did you do?” I ask.

He looks between us. “Listen, you two are a massive black hole of shit! I had to watch you all use and manipulate each other. When you asked for a new-baby package for him at the beach, she sent a request in, too. I just figured that she would be a good new-baby package. She’s used my services before to recover some stuff. She needed help. Even when I did her background, it showed a blue-collar background. Dad was in some trouble and did some time. Mom was a good wife. There was nothing in her background that had to do with the Irish.”

“I had a choice. I chose her because she was the furthest from you and Reese. No offense, Adam, but I needed that.” He narrows in on me.

That’s fair. “But the line she walks is thinning out and she won't tell me anything.”

“I can see what I can dig up. Can I bring in an assistant?” Donald asks.

Kevin drops a mound of cash, folded in a silver clip, and Donald chokes on air. I would choke on air. Pure cash. He drops two phones on the table and looks between the two of us.

“I don’t give a shit who you bring in, as long as they are trustworthy,” Kevin says.

“Where did you get that money, Kevin?” I ask.

Money is the root of all evil, and this man has dropped a load. Kevin doesn’t flinch when I narrow my eyes on him. Money, Irish, and a woman have this man's humanity shut down.
