“I figured. And you’re the best sucker they’ve got to work your life away at it.”

“You know it.” Kane held up his hands as he accepted his fate. He glanced to the side, noticing they were getting some attention, and lowered his voice. “I’m a little surprised you’re willing to show your face around here, considering what happened.”

Bennett knew Kane didn’t hold any grudges against him for that. As part of the Glenwood pack, Kane understood more of what was happening than most other officers around them. “I’m not willing to do it for long. Are you free to go for a ride? I’ve got some information I’d like to unload on you.”

“I was just about to head out on my break, actually.” Kane stood up and grabbed his keys. “I’ll drive.”

“If you insist.” They went out the side door to the private lot, and Bennett followed him to his squad car.

“I ought to insist you ride in the back,” Kane cracked.

It felt a little too familiar getting into the front seat of a squad car. With Kane, though, it was a comfortable feeling. “It’s been a minute.”

“Sure has,” Kane agreed. “Whatever you’ve got to talk about must be big for you to come all the way into the station.”

“Nah, I just missed the donuts,” Bennett replied dryly. “I just came from a visit with Rex.”

Kane raised his dark brows in surprise as he pulled up against the curb near First Light Café. “That’s not like you.”

“I know.” Bennett waited for the rest of the story until they were seated in the little restaurant.

Tiffany Fairmount, the proprietor and now part of their pack since she was mated to Declan Ridgefield, came to take their order. “What can I get you boys today?”

“Coffee and whatever delicious muffin you’ve got in stock,” Kane replied. “I don’t even care what flavor.”

“Can do. How about you, Bennett?” Tiffany turned to him.

“Um, just coffee is fine.”

She gave him a curious look, clearly wanting to feed him. “I’ve been working on some new breakfast sandwiches that I need someone to try out for me. You fellas wanna be my guinea pigs?”

“Sure,” Kane replied for both of them.

“I’m surprised she even remembers who I am,” Bennett commented as Tiffany left to get their order.

Kane shrugged. “From what I’ve seen, that’s just who she is. She knows all of her customers, their allergies, and their kids. There’s no reason why she shouldn’t know everyone in our pack, even if you don’t hang around very much.”

“There you go.” Tiffany returned quickly. “Roasted turkey, eggs, spinach, and just a bit of cheese on whole wheat. I think it still needs something else, but you let me know. And your muffin, of course.” With a wink, she was back in the kitchen.

“All right.” Kane picked up his sandwich and eyed it with interest. “Tell me what’s going on.”

Bennett left his sandwich on the plate for the moment. “It’s about the Bloodmoon Crew.”

“Isn’t that old business by now?” Kane lifted the bread and peered under it. He took a big bite and sank back in his seat.

“You’d think so, but they’re active again,” Bennett explained. “They’re stronger than ever. They’ve got eyes everywhere, and they’re dangerous as hell. I’ve been hired to take them out.”

Kane stared at him for a moment before he swallowed. “Are you serious?”

“Deadly.” His stomach growled, so Bennett picked up the sandwich. They didn’t have time to be sitting around at a café. He should’ve just insisted that they speak quickly in the parking lot so he could get back to Stephanie. His wolf was getting testy, certain he was doing the wrong thing. The sandwich was damn good, though.

“I’m not surprised you took the job,” Kane replied, “but it sure isn’t going to be easy.”

“It hasn’t been.” Bennett quickly recited his first attempt. “I knew they were strong, but it’s gotten worse. I’ve seen evidence of just how much chaos they’re causing in Eugene, but Nelson Silvergrove is smart enough to lay low. He’s keeping everything mild enough that it’s not on the cops’ radar.”

“You’re right about that,” Kane confirmed with a nod. “No one has mentioned them or anything like that in a long time. It’s all traffic tickets, drug offenses, burglaries, and the occasional murder.”

“Some of that, no doubt, has to do with the Bloodmoon Crew, even if they’ve made it look otherwise,” Bennett asserted. “They’ve grown too damn powerful for me to take down by myself. I’ve got an extra problem, too. I’ve met my mate along the way.”
