We were given our specific sins for a reason. When God made Heaven, his twin Azazel made Hell. Adon made beautiful angels in his clouded world while Azazel made many different species of demons to live in his created world. No demon was the same. However, because there were so many differences, there were also many fights and problems.

Twelve of us had more problems than most. I was strong for a demon, but I was a serpent. I could slither through water, dirt, sand, anything. Others could walk. They were faster than me. I had multiple rows of sharp teeth, yet others could get to the food faster. I focused so much on what others could do, that I never really learned what was special about me. I killed many a demon to prove I was better when, in reality, I wanted their attributes and qualities.

As penance for killing my fellow demons, Azazel gave me a punishment. I could now only feed off the envy of others. The repercussions forced me to focus on myself and it made me stronger than most.

My brothers have similar stories. A punishment bestowed on them by our creator, Azazel. The punishments made us the strongest in Hell because we were now aware. We were able to improve ourselves and manipulate those around us. The stronger the demon, the stronger our feed. Seeing as my brothers are the strongest is Hell, Azazel made it so we cannot feed off each other. None of us can be stronger than the others.

I still struggle with envy.

I won the idiotic challenge to see the girl. Bree was meant to be mine for the day. When I attempted to portal to Earth however, I was thrown back. One of my brothers was already there.

Now Gluttony is back from his visit with news that she wishes to be left alone. She needs time to process and if we wish to prove our point that she is watched by Adon or his angels, then we must respect her wishes. I can stay away for a couple of days. She doesn’t know that it was me who was meant to spend the day with her. I can wait for her.

What I can’t do is wait for Sloth. Halfway through the meeting Beelzebub held regarding Brianna, Belphegor left. A smug smirk was on his lips as he told us she was calling his name through their bond. A bond she doesn’t even know is there. I want her bound to me. I may not be able to feed off my fellow kings, but it is still nice to see the envy in their eyes when something goes my way.

An hour later, we are called back to the throne room. Belphegor states that she called to tell him of her possible feelings for Beelzebub. She wanted permission to pursue her feelings. He told her she could fall for whoever she wanted. He failed to tell her that it was exactly what we wanted. To be around to help her commit sins.

There are seven major sins. Committing more than three sins a year will add your name to the List of Hell. Only perfection is sent to Heaven. Three or less, you are sent to purgatory to be reincarnated. And to commit a sin is to act on your feelings. You can be envious of someone else’s possessions. It’s not until you steal, or attempt to, that you have actually committed a sin.

Lust is the easiest sin to commit. Gluttony is next. Then Rage, Sloth, Envy, and Greed. Pride is different. Lucifer is not a demon. He wasn’t given a punishment by Azazel. His punishment was given by Adon, who cast him to Hell. With a sin, emotion is not enough. You must commit an act based on your emotions. With pride, it is what you won’t do. If you do not humble yourself, you are committing the sin of pride.

Brianna committed two out of seven already. Lust and Pride here in Hell. She hasn’t committed anything else while on Earth. Yet. When it is my time, she will commit envy. I swear it. I do not fail.

The moment the seventy-two hours are up, I portal to Earth. Shifting to a human form, I walk onto the street. Seconds I have been on land, and I can already feel the envy begin. I can feed off the emotion like an appetizer. I won’t get the full meal until they commit an act based on the emotion. I pinpoint Bree’s aura and teleport to the building. Walking in, the woman at the front desk goes on instant alert. “Hello sir. How can I help you today?”

My lips curve into my best smirk. “Hello beautiful. I’m looking for Brianna?”

The woman’s smile slips for a second. “Oh. Can I ask who you are? For safety reasons.”

“My name is Levi. She is currently in a relationship with my brother, and I must speak to her.”

Her smile widens again at my declaration. “Sure, sweetheart. Let me tell her you’re here.”

Oh, I could get this one to sin quick. After a minute or so, the woman comes back with Brianna in tow. I give her my best smile, knowing how I look in my human form.

“Green,” she mumbles. Turning to the other woman, Brianna gives a fake smile. “Madison, would you mind helping Ashley with my class? It’s nap time so it shouldn’t be a problem.” Begrudgingly, Madison gets up and walks off, smirking at me over her shoulder with a wink. I give her a little wave, yet my flirting with another woman doesn’t bring jealousy to Brianna.

“Bree.” I nod my head to say hello.

“Envy.” Smart girl.

“Knew just by the color, did you?”

“Green with envy. What can I do for you? I know my forty-eight hours are up, but I do appreciate you all respecting my wishes.”

“Of course. We want you to like us. Not all of us are ruled by a need to be dominant.”

Her head cocks to the side with a small chuckle. “Are we referring to Angel?” I don’t answer. She’s not wrong. “How did you get him to stay away?”

“He was outnumbered.” It’s now or never. “I understand that you are working currently, however, I’d like to treat you to dinner. Beel has already agreed to take care of your son. I believe they bonded the other night.”

A blush fills her round cheeks, the color almost matching the tips of her hair. “I…. I’d like that.” Wrath was right. Her eyes are the most beautiful shade of green. They crinkle in the corners as smiles, her teeth scraping over her bottom lip.

A child’s cry takes Brianna’s attention away from me. She looks conflicted, and I’m hoping it’s because she would rather stay with me. Madison rounds the corner and Brianna takes it as her cue. “Guess I should head back…”

“I’ll see you tonight.” Her cheeks flush as she walks down the hallway. I stay put, and before she turns the corner, she looks behind her. Our eyes meet… I think I feel what my brothers were talking about.

She’s breathtaking. There’s no deceit in her, just raw honesty. A breath of fresh air.
