Great. I’m either going to bleed out, get crushed in the collapse, or burn alive. Not exactly the type of luck that would convince me to buy a lottery ticket.

A body lands on mine just as the air itself around me explodes. The brightness behind my eyelids goes dark and my thoughts are abruptly cut off.

I’m dead.

CHAPTER 20

Helia

“Grayden,” I mumble before I open my eyes.

I’m lying on the most comfortable mattress ever on a king-sized bed in a room that’s even bigger than the Presidential Suite in San Francisco.

Hekate.

She must’ve kidnapped me to finish the cleansing. Maybe she decided on a different tactic to put me in line.

I push myself up on my elbows and look around the room that’s full of neutral colors. It’s beautiful but it lacks personality.

“Hello?” I ask, my voice a bit stronger and louder now.

As if on cue, the door opens, and through it walk two tall men who look a lot like Grayden. They have the same eyes, although Grayden’s are a bit lighter compared to theirs, and they have the same dark hair color. The one on the left’s jaw is impressively chiseled and his high cheekbones draw my attention. That doesn’t mean that the other one is any less handsome. Not with his broad shoulders, just as strong jaw, and a faux hawk hairstyle.

“Who are you?” I ask, quietly proud of myself for not letting my voice betray my nervousness. “Where’s Grayden?”

“I’m Gavin, and this is Garren,” the one with broad shoulders introduces them. “It’s very nice to finally meet you, Helia.”

My muscles tense with realization. That’s the wolf who killed my parents. They’re Grayden’s brothers. The two powerful kings of shadows.

“Where’s Grayden?” I ask again, my mind flashing with a memory of him lying on the floor with a knife wound in his abdomen, and then me covering him with my body to protect him from the explosion that followed the implosion of two powers.

Gavin and Garren exchange a look. I grip the sheets, digging my nails into them. I take a deep breath, willing my heart to slow down.

“Is he okay?” I ask again, mentally cursing myself for sounding weak and vulnerable.

Gavin’s eyes widen in surprise, and he quickly nods his head. “Yeah, yeah, he’s good.”

“He should join us any moment now,” Garren adds with a soft and gentle tone.

My eyes fill with tears. They’re talking about him like he’s here. I need to confirm it though. I have to know for sure.

“He’s alive?”

Garren’s face softens with a smile he gives me. He looks so much like Grayden, and yet, there are also differences. Much like the ones between Hekate and me, even though we were twins.

“I don’t know what exactly you two went through in that basement, but there’s one thing that I’m certain of,” Garren starts. He sits on the edge of the bed, close enough for me to feel his presence but far enough to give me a semblance of my personal space. “You saved his life. In more ways than one.”

“You turned our brother into a person we’re all very proud of,” Gavin agrees, his dark eyes shining with pride.

“No,” I disagree. “It was all him. He had it in him. You can’t change a person into something they’re not. It’s like one of the basic laws of nature.”

The door opens again, and I know it’s him before I see him. My heart skips a beat in excitement. The butterflies in my belly flutter to life, causing a wave of heat that spreads across my cheeks as a gentle but potent blush.

Grayden’s eyes immediately land on mine. Behind his well-groomed stubble, the corners of his mouth lift up into a wide smile. His hair is wet, and his T-shirt is sticking against his skin. He must be fresh out of a shower. He seems happy and uninjured. He is okay.

I release a breath I didn’t know I was holding. The emotion of seeing him overwhelms me. The tears spill down my cheeks and I lift my hands to wipe them.

“My love,” Grayden breathes.
